Free Guide to Adding a Household on Netflix

Understanding Netflix Household Profiles and Account Sharing

Netflix allows account holders to create multiple household profiles within a single subscription plan. A household profile is a personalized space within your Netflix account where viewing history, recommendations, and watchlist preferences are stored separately. This feature means that different people using the same account can have their own unique experience without their viewing habits affecting what others see.

When you first set up a Netflix account, the platform creates a primary profile automatically. From there, you can add additional profiles directly through your account settings. Each profile maintains its own list of shows and movies the person has watched, their personal "My List" or watchlist, and individualized recommendations based on their viewing patterns. This separation is useful for households where multiple people watch Netflix, as it prevents recommendations from becoming mixed together.

Netflix's standard plans come with different profile limits depending on which plan you choose. A Basic plan typically allows one profile, while Standard and Premium plans allow multiple profiles. The exact number may vary by region and plan changes Netflix makes over time. Understanding your plan's profile limits helps you determine how many household members can have their own personalized experience.

It's important to note the distinction between creating profiles on your account and actual household members. Netflix profiles are intended for people living in the same household. The terms of service require that account holders use their subscription within a single household, though Netflix's enforcement of this varies. Creating a profile is different from granting someone access to your account—profiles are all part of the same subscription.

Takeaway: Before adding profiles, check your Netflix plan type and see how many profiles your subscription includes, then understand that each profile person gets personalized recommendations and viewing history separate from others on the account.

Step-by-Step Process for Adding a Profile to Your Netflix Account

Adding a new profile to your Netflix account follows a straightforward process that works the same way across different devices. The process begins by signing into your Netflix account on any device—a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Once you're logged in, look for your account menu, which typically appears in the top right corner of the screen or in the main menu options depending on your device type.

From your account menu, select the option to manage profiles or view all profiles. Netflix displays this differently depending on whether you're on a web browser or using the mobile app, but the concept remains the same. You should see a screen showing all existing profiles on your account. At the bottom or alongside existing profiles, there will be an option to add a new profile, often indicated by a plus sign (+) or text saying "Add Profile."

When you click to add a profile, Netflix prompts you to enter a name for the new profile. Choose a name that identifies who will use it—for example, a family member's name or a descriptor like "Kids" or "Guest." Netflix may also ask you to select an avatar or profile picture from a selection of available icons. This helps household members easily identify their own profile when viewing the account.

After selecting a name and avatar, you may see options for parental controls. If you're creating a profile for children, you can set maturity level restrictions that prevent inappropriate content from appearing in that profile's recommendations and search results. These settings are optional and can be changed later. Once you confirm your choices, Netflix creates the profile and returns you to your profiles screen.

The entire process typically takes less than two minutes. After creation, the new profile appears alongside your other profiles on the home screen. To use this new profile, anyone can click on it from the profiles selection screen when opening Netflix, and it functions as a completely separate viewing experience within your account.

Takeaway: Adding a profile involves signing into your account, finding the profile management section, selecting "Add Profile," naming it, choosing an avatar, and confirming—a quick process that takes just a few minutes through your account settings.

What Information You'll Need and Preparing Your Account

Before you begin adding a household profile, you need only basic information: the Netflix account username and password. This is the login credential that the primary account holder uses to access the account. If you're not the primary account holder, you'll need to request this information from whoever manages the Netflix subscription.

No additional personal information like email addresses, phone numbers, or payment information is required to add a profile. Netflix doesn't ask for these details during the profile creation process because the new profile is simply an extension of the existing account—it doesn't create a separate subscription or billing arrangement.

Before adding profiles, it's worth reviewing your current account settings. Log into your account and check which plan you're subscribed to, as this determines how many profiles you can create. If you're unsure of your plan type, Netflix displays this information in your account settings under subscription details. You can also see how many profiles you currently have and whether you have room to add more.

If you've reached your profile limit and want to add another, you have two options: delete an existing profile that's no longer needed, or upgrade your plan to one that supports more profiles. Deleting a profile removes its viewing history and personalized recommendations, though this cannot be undone if you delete it permanently. Some account holders choose to pause a profile temporarily instead of deleting it entirely.

Additionally, consider whether you want to establish any parental control settings before creating profiles. If children will use Netflix on your account, setting up maturity restrictions ahead of time ensures age-appropriate content filtering is in place. These controls can be configured when you create the profile or adjusted afterward in your account settings.

Takeaway: You'll only need your account login, and you should verify your plan type and available profile slots beforehand, then consider what parental controls you want in place if children will use the account.

Managing Profiles and Account Access for Household Members

Once you've created profiles for household members, managing who uses which profile involves ongoing account oversight. Netflix allows you to see profile activity, including what each profile has watched and when it was last used. This information appears in your account activity section and helps you understand usage patterns across your household.

Each profile operates independently within your subscription. This means different people can watch different content simultaneously—one person can watch a show on their profile while another watches something else on their profile, as long as your plan supports simultaneous streams. Standard plans typically allow two simultaneous streams, while Premium plans allow four, and Basic plans allow one.

If you want to change settings for a specific profile, you can do so through your account management interface. This includes changing the profile name, updating the avatar picture, or modifying parental control settings. You can also lock a profile with a PIN if you want to restrict access to it—useful if younger children use the account and you want to prevent them from accessing certain profiles.

Netflix also provides tools to review and manage login activity. You can see a list of devices that have accessed your account and their locations. If you notice unusual activity or want to end someone's access, you can sign them out from your account management page. This removes their active session without requiring them to know your password.

For households where profile users change over time—such as guests visiting temporarily—you can delete a profile once it's no longer needed. Before deleting, understand that this removes all viewing history and recommendations associated with that profile. Netflix doesn't offer a way to archive or pause a profile indefinitely, though you can simply stop using it and leave it inactive.

Takeaway: Manage your household's Netflix use by monitoring profile activity, understanding simultaneous stream limits on your plan, setting parental controls as needed, and using Netflix's tools to control device access and remove outdated profiles.

Parental Controls and Content Restrictions by Profile

Netflix provides parental control features that work at the profile level, meaning you can set different content restrictions for different profiles. This is particularly useful in households with children of varying ages. When you create a profile or edit an existing one, you can select a maturity level that determines what content appears in that profile's recommendations and search results.

Netflix uses rating systems that vary by country. In the United States, profiles can be set to show content rated for young children only, older children, teens, or all audiences. These settings don't block content entirely—a user can still attempt to watch restricted content if they find it through a link—but they prevent it from appearing in recommendations and regular browsing.

Beyond maturity level ratings, Netflix allows you to set a PIN (personal identification number) that locks a profile. When a profile is PIN-protected, anyone trying to access it must enter the PIN first. This prevents children from switching to adult
