Free Guide to AARP Tax-Aide Services and Tax Filing

Overview of AARP Tax-Aide Services

AARP Tax-Aide is a volunteer-run program that offers free tax return preparation services to people age 50 and older, with special focus on those with low to moderate incomes. The program has been operating since 1968, making it one of the longest-running tax preparation services in the United States. Each year, the program prepares hundreds of thousands of tax returns at no cost to participants.

The service operates through a network of trained volunteers who work at locations throughout the country during tax season. These volunteers receive training from the IRS and must pass a competency test to ensure they understand current tax laws and regulations. The program covers federal tax return preparation, as well as state returns in most cases. Participants do not pay any fees for the preparation services, though they may choose to have their refund deposited directly into their bank account or receive it by mail.

AARP Tax-Aide serves people across various income levels and situations. While the program targets those with modest incomes, it also helps people with more complex tax situations, including those who own small businesses, have investment income, or are dealing with rental property income. The program does not discriminate based on AARP membership—many participants use Tax-Aide services without being AARP members.

The program's mission centers on reducing tax burden and helping people understand their tax obligations. Volunteers take time to explain tax situations to participants, answer questions about deductions and credits, and ensure that returns are filed accurately. This educational component distinguishes Tax-Aide from purely transactional tax preparation services.

Takeaway: Tax-Aide offers no-cost tax preparation through trained volunteers at locations across the country. The service is available to people age 50 and older, regardless of AARP membership status.

Finding Tax-Aide Locations and Scheduling Appointments

Locating a Tax-Aide site near you involves using AARP's online locator tool, which is updated regularly throughout tax season. The website allows you to enter your zip code and displays all Tax-Aide locations within a specified distance. Each location listing includes the address, phone number, hours of operation, and sometimes information about which languages are spoken by volunteers at that site.

Tax-Aide sites operate from early February through mid-April each year, though some locations may have extended hours in April as the tax deadline approaches. Sites may be located in community centers, libraries, senior centers, or AARP offices. Many locations operate on a walk-in basis during certain hours, while others require appointments. The locator tool typically indicates whether a location takes walk-in clients or requires scheduling.

For those who prefer to schedule appointments in advance, most Tax-Aide sites allow you to reserve a time slot by phone. Some locations may also offer online scheduling through their websites. Booking an appointment can reduce wait times, though appointments are not always necessary if you prefer to walk in during operating hours. During peak tax season—typically late March and early April—wait times at popular locations may be substantial.

Several Tax-Aide locations have expanded to offer virtual tax preparation for people who cannot travel to a physical site. In these cases, you would complete a questionnaire online, speak with a volunteer by phone or video, and receive guidance through the preparation process remotely. The availability of virtual services varies by location, so checking with your local site is important.

Some Tax-Aide sites serve specific populations, including homebound individuals. If you are unable to travel due to disability or health concerns, contacting AARP Tax-Aide directly can provide information about services available in your area for people with mobility limitations.

Takeaway: Use AARP's online locator tool to find nearby Tax-Aide sites, check hours and appointment policies, and consider scheduling in advance to minimize wait times during busy tax season.

Documents and Information to Bring

Preparing for your Tax-Aide appointment requires gathering several categories of documents. Having these items organized before arriving—or before connecting virtually—makes the process more efficient and helps volunteers prepare your return accurately. The specific documents needed depend on your tax situation, but certain items are universally necessary.

Basic identification documents include a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport. You will also need your Social Security number and the Social Security numbers of any dependents claimed on your return. If you file jointly with a spouse, both Social Security numbers are required. For any dependent children, you should also have their dates of birth.

Income documentation is essential for accurate return preparation. Gather all W-2 forms from employers, which typically arrive by January 31st each year. If you have self-employment income, bring records of business income and expenses. For investment income, collect 1099 forms reporting interest, dividends, or capital gains from banks and investment firms. Retirement income requires 1099-R forms from pension providers or IRA custodians. Social Security income statements, typically received annually, are also important.

Documentation of deductions and credits varies based on your situation. If you itemize deductions, bring receipts or statements for charitable contributions, medical expenses, property taxes, and state income taxes paid. Mortgage interest statements (Form 1098) are helpful for homeowners. For those claiming education credits, gather documentation of tuition payments and education expenses. If you paid childcare expenses, bring information about the childcare provider, including their name, address, and tax identification number.

Previous year tax return information can be useful, particularly if your situation has changed. Many Tax-Aide volunteers ask to see last year's return to identify changes in income, family status, or filing situation. If you have moved, changed marital status, or had major life changes since last year, mention these when you arrive or schedule your appointment.

Keep track of payments made toward your taxes throughout the year. Documentation of estimated tax payments, prior-year taxes paid with a prior-year return extension, or taxes withheld from retirement income should be gathered and brought to your appointment.

Takeaway: Organize identification, income documentation (W-2s, 1099s), deduction receipts, and records of tax payments before your Tax-Aide appointment to ensure efficient and thorough return preparation.

Tax Credits and Deductions Tax-Aide Volunteers Can Explain

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are trained to explain various tax credits and deductions that may reduce tax burden. Understanding which of these apply to your situation can substantially lower the taxes owed or increase refunds due. A tax credit directly reduces taxes owed, while a deduction reduces the income subject to taxation.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is available to people with lower incomes who work, including seniors with part-time employment or self-employment income. In 2024, the maximum credit can reach several thousand dollars for families, though the amount varies based on income and family size. The Saver's Credit provides a tax reduction for people with modest incomes who contribute to retirement accounts. This credit recognizes that lower-income workers may struggle to save for retirement while covering current expenses.

The Child Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit benefit people with dependent children. These credits have been significantly increased in recent years and can substantially reduce tax burden for working families. The Child and Dependent Care Credit may be available to people who pay for childcare to enable them to work. The American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit support education expenses for students and their families.

Older taxpayers may benefit from the Credit for the Elderly and Disabled, which provides tax reduction for people age 65 and older with limited income. Seniors who have received a lump-sum distribution from a pension or retirement plan may also have special tax treatment options that volunteers can explain.

Deductions that Tax-Aide volunteers can address include the standard deduction, which all taxpayers can claim, and itemized deductions for those whose deductible expenses exceed the standard amount. Medical and dental expenses may be deductible if they exceed a certain percentage of income. Charitable contributions, mortgage interest, and property taxes are commonly deductible. Self-employed individuals can deduct business expenses and may claim the home office deduction if they meet requirements.

Tax-Aide volunteers can also explain how certain income may not be subject to federal income tax. For example, some types of Social Security benefits are not taxable depending on other income in the household. Understanding these provisions can clarify tax filing obligations and identify potential credits or deductions.
