Understanding AARP Tax-Aide: What This Service Offers

AARP Tax-Aide is a nationwide program that provides free tax preparation services to people who need support completing their federal and state tax returns. This program has operated for over 60 years, with more than 2 million tax returns prepared annually through participating locations across the United States. The program focuses on serving older adults, people with low to moderate income, and individuals with disabilities, though tax help is available to many people regardless of age or income level.

The program trains volunteer tax preparers who work year-round to understand current tax laws and filing requirements. These volunteers operate through community centers, libraries, senior centers, and other local organizations. They use tax software provided by IRS partners to prepare returns electronically, which can help reduce errors and speed up refunds when returns are filed.

AARP Tax-Aide services are provided at no cost—there are no fees for the tax preparation itself. Volunteers do not charge for consultation or for preparing and filing your return. This distinguishes the program from commercial tax preparation services that typically charge fees based on return complexity.

The types of returns that volunteers can prepare include standard 1040 forms with common deductions like the standard deduction, Schedule A (itemized deductions), Schedule C (self-employment income), rental property income, and retirement account distributions. Volunteers receive training in current tax rules each year, which means the information they provide reflects the tax year being filed.

Practical Takeaway: Before booking an appointment, consider whether your tax situation involves common scenarios like W-2 income, standard or itemized deductions, Social Security benefits, and retirement distributions. If your return involves more complex business structures or specialized investments, you may need to research whether a particular location can handle your specific situation.

How to Find AARP Tax-Aide Locations Near You

Finding a Tax-Aide location involves using the AARP Tax-Aide locator tool, which is available on the AARP website. This tool allows you to search by zip code or city name to find nearby sites offering the service. The locator typically displays the address, phone number, and hours of operation for each location. As of recent years, over 5,000 locations operate across all 50 states, though the number and distribution of sites varies by region and season.

The service operates primarily during tax season, which typically runs from February through mid-April, though some locations may begin in January or continue into mid-May. The exact dates vary by location, so checking the locator for your specific area provides accurate timing information. Some locations operate year-round on a limited basis, which the locator will indicate.

Common sites offering Tax-Aide services include:

• Public libraries and library systems
• Senior centers and adult day programs
• Community centers and recreation centers
• AARP affiliated locations
• Veterans organizations and military family support offices
• Area agencies on aging
• Nonprofit community organizations
• Churches and faith-based organizations
• Urban community action agencies

When searching, the locator tool provides information about whether a location offers in-person appointments, virtual/remote appointments, or both. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many sites have added remote options where you can meet with a volunteer via video call or phone. This means you may be able to connect with a volunteer even if no in-person location operates particularly close to your home.

Practical Takeaway: Once you identify 2-3 locations that work with your schedule, note their phone numbers and website information. Locations may have different specialty areas—some may handle business income while others focus on straightforward returns—so having backup options ensures you can reach someone if your first choice cannot accommodate your tax situation.

Steps to Book Your Tax-Aide Appointment

Booking an appointment at AARP Tax-Aide varies depending on the location you choose, as each site manages scheduling independently. However, most locations follow similar general patterns. Here are the typical steps involved in the appointment booking process:

Step 1: Contact the Location Most sites require you to call ahead to schedule an appointment. Phone numbers are provided through the AARP Tax-Aide locator. When you call, have your basic information ready—your name, phone number, and the best times for you to come in. Some locations accept appointments during specific hours only, so you may need to call during their scheduling window.

Step 2: Provide Basic Information The site coordinator or volunteer receptionist will ask about your general tax situation. This helps them determine if they can handle your return and estimate how long your appointment might take. Be prepared to mention whether you have W-2 income, self-employment income, rental income, investment income, or other types of earnings. This information helps them arrange scheduling appropriately.

Step 3: Choose Your Appointment Date and Time Once the location confirms they can assist you, they will offer available time slots. Peak times during mid-March through early April fill quickly, so calling early in the tax season increases your options. If the location offers remote appointments, you can ask about that option, which may have different availability than in-person slots.

Step 4: Receive Appointment Details The site will provide you with your appointment date, time, and any specific instructions. Some locations may ask you to bring certain documents to your appointment; they will explain what you need to bring. Others may request you bring documents to the appointment so volunteers can see original forms.

Step 5: Prepare Your Documents Before Your Appointment Before your appointment date, gather tax documents you will need. Having these ready in advance makes your appointment run more smoothly and shortens the time you spend with the volunteer.

Practical Takeaway: Call your preferred location within the first two weeks of tax season to book an appointment. Have a calendar visible when you call so you can immediately confirm your availability. Ask specifically about whether the appointment is remote or in-person, what documents to bring, and how long the appointment typically takes.

Documents and Information to Prepare Before Your Appointment

Bringing the correct documents to your AARP Tax-Aide appointment significantly reduces appointment time and ensures accurate return preparation. The specific documents you need depend on your individual tax situation, but here is a comprehensive list of common documents volunteers will typically request:

Income Documentation Gather all W-2 forms from employers, which should arrive by January 31st. If you receive 1099 forms for independent contractor work, freelance income, or other non-W-2 income, collect those as well. For Social Security benefits, you will need your 1099-SSA statement. If you receive unemployment compensation, pensions, or distributions from retirement accounts, gather those corresponding 1099 forms.

Benefit Statements If you receive Medicare, Medicaid, or other government benefits, some of these may be relevant to your return. While benefits themselves are typically not taxable, they may affect tax calculations. Keep statements about any benefits you received during the tax year.

Deduction Records If you plan to itemize deductions rather than take the standard deduction, organize records of medical expenses, state and local taxes paid, mortgage interest, charitable contributions, and other deductible expenses. For charitable contributions, keep receipts or written documentation. Keep receipts for medical expenses and records showing property taxes or income taxes paid.

Previous Tax Return Bring a copy of your tax return from the previous year if you have one. This helps volunteers understand your situation and serves as a reference point for changes in your circumstances.

Personal Identification Information Have your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) available, along with the same information for your spouse if filing jointly and for any dependents claimed on your return.

Address and Contact Information Bring current contact information including your mailing address and phone number. If you have moved during the tax year, have both your previous address and current address available.

Bank Account Information (if claiming refund) If you want your refund deposited directly to your bank account, have your bank routing number and account number available.
