Understanding AARP Membership and What It Includes

AARP is a nonprofit organization that serves people age 50 and older. Membership provides access to various programs, services, and discounts. As of 2024, AARP has over 37 million members in the United States. The organization focuses on health, financial security, and personal fulfillment for older adults.

When you become an AARP member, you receive a membership card that serves as your proof of membership. This card is the key to accessing the discounts and programs that AARP offers. The membership includes both online resources and physical benefits you can use at participating retailers and service providers.

AARP membership operates on a yearly basis. Members receive a membership card in the mail, along with access to the AARP website and mobile app. The card typically shows your membership number, name, and expiration date. Different membership tiers may offer varying levels of benefits, though the standard membership provides substantial value.

The organization partners with thousands of businesses across the country. These partnerships mean members can access discounts at restaurants, hotels, car rental companies, retailers, and service providers. The card itself is a physical document that you present to receive discounts, though many businesses also accept membership verification through the AARP app.

Members also gain access to AARP publications, including AARP Magazine and AARP Bulletin, which arrive at your home. The organization publishes articles about health topics, financial planning, travel, technology, and lifestyle issues relevant to older adults. These publications and online content provide information on various subjects without requiring additional fees.

Practical takeaway: Your AARP membership card is your primary tool for accessing discounts and services. Keep it with you when shopping or traveling, and familiarize yourself with which businesses near you participate in AARP discount programs.

Pharmacy and Prescription Discount Programs

One of the most frequently used membership benefits is the pharmacy discount program. AARP offers negotiated prescription drug discounts through partnerships with major pharmacy chains including CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and others. As of 2024, the program covers thousands of medications across most common prescription drug categories.

The way the pharmacy discount works is straightforward. When you fill a prescription at a participating pharmacy, you provide your AARP membership number. The pharmacy applies the negotiated discount to your cost. The discount applies whether you have Medicare drug coverage or not, though the way discounts interact with Medicare can vary based on your specific coverage.

According to AARP's data, members can save anywhere from 10% to over 60% on certain medications, depending on the specific drug and pharmacy. Generic medications often have higher discount percentages than brand-name drugs. For example, common maintenance medications like those for high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol management typically have substantial discounts available.

The pharmacy program requires no additional enrollment beyond your AARP membership. You do not need to sign up separately or pay extra fees. Simply provide your membership card when filling prescriptions. The discounts are available whether you are using insurance or paying out-of-pocket for medications.

It's important to note that AARP pharmacy discounts are different from Medicare Part D drug coverage. If you have Medicare, your Part D plan may provide different pricing on the same medications. Some members find their Part D coverage offers better rates on certain drugs, while AARP discounts work better for others. Comparing prices across both programs for your regular medications can help you understand which option saves you the most money.

Practical takeaway: Before your next pharmacy visit, ask your pharmacist if AARP discounts are available for your regular prescriptions. Many people find significant savings by simply presenting their membership card, even if they also have other insurance coverage.

Travel and Lodging Discounts

AARP membership includes negotiated discounts with major hotel chains, car rental companies, and travel service providers. These discounts can apply to room rates, car rentals, and travel packages. AARP partners with brands that include major hotel chains in the economy, mid-range, and luxury segments.

Hotel discounts typically range from 5% to 15% off standard room rates, though specific percentages vary by location, season, and chain. Popular chains offering AARP rates include Choice Hotels (Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Clarion), Best Western, Marriott properties, Hilton hotels, and others. The discounts apply to direct bookings when you mention or enter your AARP membership number.

Car rental discounts are available through major companies including Hertz, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise. These discounts typically range from 5% to 30% depending on the company and rental type. Discounts often apply to economy through mid-size vehicles. Some promotional periods may offer enhanced discounts for AARP members.

Travel planning resources through AARP include information about tour operators and travel packages designed with older travelers in mind. AARP-endorsed travel companies offer escorted tours to domestic and international destinations. These programs often include accommodations, meals, and planned activities. While these are premium services requiring separate payment, they are negotiated with AARP members' needs and interests in mind.

Cruise ship discounts are also available through AARP partnerships. Major cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, and Carnival offer special pricing for AARP members. These discounts typically apply to cruise fares when you book directly and provide your membership number. The savings can amount to hundreds of dollars on longer cruises.

Practical takeaway: When booking travel, always mention your AARP membership or enter your member number during online reservations. The process takes seconds, and even a 5-10% discount on a week-long hotel stay or car rental can save you $50 to $200 or more.

Health and Wellness Information Resources

AARP provides extensive information about health topics relevant to older adults. These resources are available through the AARP website, magazine, mobile app, and occasional educational events. The organization publishes content on topics including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, cognitive health, and many other conditions. This information is written by health journalists and reviewed for accuracy, though it is educational in nature and not a substitute for medical advice from your doctor.

The AARP Nurse Advice Line is a service available to members in many states. This service allows members to call and speak with registered nurses about health questions. The service is informational and does not provide diagnosis or treatment plans, but nurses can discuss symptoms, explain medical concepts, and help members understand when to see a doctor. Availability varies by state.

Practical takeaway: When you have questions about your health or a medical condition, explore AARP's health resources first. They provide reliable, understandable information that can help you have more informed conversations with your healthcare providers.
