Free Guide to AARP Job Board and Resources

What is the AARP Job Board and How It Works

The AARP Job Board is an online job search platform operated by AARP, an organization focused on issues related to people age 50 and older. This resource allows job seekers to search for open positions and learn about employment opportunities across various industries and job types. The job board functions as a searchable database where individuals can browse postings, review job descriptions, and understand what different employers are looking for.

The platform was created in response to research showing that workers age 50 and older face unique challenges in the job market. According to AARP's own research, people in this age group often experience longer periods of unemployment compared to younger workers and may face age-related bias. The job board attempts to address this by featuring employers who have indicated they value experienced workers and are actively seeking candidates across different age groups.

The job board operates at aarp.org/work. Users can visit the site and begin searching without providing personal information upfront. The search function allows people to filter jobs by location, job category, company, and work arrangement (such as full-time, part-time, remote, or temporary positions). Job listings include standard employment information such as job title, company name, location, job description, and in many cases, salary information.

AARP also partners with several major job listing sites to expand the range of opportunities shown on their platform. This means a single search on the AARP Job Board may return results from multiple sources, giving users a broader view of what's available. The partnerships help ensure that the job board features a substantial number of current openings rather than a limited selection.

Practical Takeaway: Start by visiting aarp.org/work and familiarizing yourself with how the search filters work. Try searching for jobs in your field or industry to see what types of positions are currently listed and what skills employers are emphasizing in job descriptions.

Navigating Job Search Features and Filters

The AARP Job Board includes several features designed to help narrow down job searches and find positions that match individual circumstances and preferences. Understanding these features can save time and help focus your search on opportunities most relevant to your situation.

The location filter allows users to search by city, state, or zip code, or to view jobs available nationwide. This is particularly useful if you're considering relocation or want to explore remote positions that can be performed from anywhere. Many employers now offer remote work options, and filtering for these positions can significantly expand available opportunities for people who prefer working from home or have mobility considerations.

Job category filters help organize positions by field or industry type. Common categories on job boards typically include healthcare, education, retail, administrative, management, sales, technology, and skilled trades. You can select one or multiple categories to view. This feature helps if you're exploring new fields or want to understand what types of work are available beyond your previous experience.

The work arrangement filter shows different employment structures available. Full-time positions typically require 35-40 hours per week and often include benefits. Part-time positions offer fewer hours and may or may not include benefits depending on the employer. Temporary or contract work may last for a specific period. Gig or freelance positions involve completing individual projects or tasks. Understanding these distinctions helps identify positions that fit your current situation, whether you're seeking full employment or supplemental income.

Many job listings on the AARP Job Board also display salary information, though not all employers provide this detail. When salary information is available, you can see the range an employer is offering for that position. This information helps you understand whether a position meets your financial needs before spending time on further review. Some job listings also mention company benefits, such as health insurance, retirement plans, or flexible schedules.

The job board typically includes a feature to save or bookmark positions you want to review later. This allows you to compare multiple jobs without losing track of ones you found interesting. Creating a system to organize saved positions—such as grouping them by priority or job type—can help you manage your job search efficiently.

Practical Takeaway: Practice using each filter individually and in combination with others to understand how to create a targeted search that returns positions matching your preferences. Save three to five jobs that interest you to practice comparing job descriptions and requirements.

Additional AARP Resources Beyond the Job Board

The AARP Job Board is one component of a broader set of resources and information AARP provides related to work and employment. Understanding what additional materials and tools are available can enhance your job search and provide context about employment trends and workplace issues affecting older workers.

AARP publishes research and reports on employment trends, age discrimination, and workplace dynamics. These reports, which are often available for free on the AARP website, provide data and analysis about how the labor market is changing and what challenges workers age 50 and older experience. Reading these reports can help you understand the broader employment landscape and make informed decisions about your own job search strategy.

The organization also offers educational content about topics directly related to job seeking and employment. This includes articles about updating your resume, preparing for interviews, understanding employment contracts, negotiating salary, and addressing common concerns about working in later life. This content is typically presented in an easy-to-read format and draws on expertise from employment professionals.

AARP maintains sections of its website dedicated to working in specific fields, such as healthcare, education, or skilled trades. These sections often include information about job outlook, typical salary ranges, required training or certifications, and specific resources for people interested in that field. If you're considering a career change or want to understand opportunities in a particular industry, these field-specific guides can provide valuable context.

The organization also provides information about freelance and consulting work, part-time employment, and starting a business. Some people age 50 and older pursue self-employment or entrepreneurship rather than traditional employment. AARP's resources in these areas address questions about business planning, financing, legal structure, and marketing for people considering these options.

AARP also publishes information about skills development and training. As jobs and technology evolve, learning new skills can improve your marketability. AARP points users toward training resources, online learning platforms, and information about workforce development programs that may be available through state agencies.

Practical Takeaway: Spend time exploring the AARP website beyond the job board itself. Identify one article or resource related to your job search challenge—whether that's resume writing, interview preparation, or information about your target industry—and review that material to complement your job searching efforts.

Understanding Age-Related Employment Challenges and How the Job Board Addresses Them

Research consistently shows that workers age 50 and older face distinct employment challenges compared to younger workers. A 2023 AARP survey found that workers in this age group experience longer average unemployment durations, take longer to secure new positions after job loss, and report concerns about age bias during hiring. Understanding these challenges provides context for why a platform like the AARP Job Board exists and how it attempts to address these issues.

One challenge involves employer perception of older workers. Some employers hold misconceptions about productivity, technological skill, or willingness to adapt. The AARP Job Board features positions from employers who have specifically indicated they value experienced workers and actively recruit across age groups. By connecting job seekers with these employers, the platform helps people find companies more likely to evaluate candidates on merit rather than age.

Another challenge involves resume and application screening. Some studies suggest that resume screening tools may unintentionally filter out candidates based on factors like graduation date or tenure at previous positions—information that could reveal age to a screener. The AARP Job Board concentrates job listings from employers and partners who have committed to inclusive hiring practices, potentially reducing the likelihood of age-related filtering.

Staying current with technological changes is also an employment challenge for some older workers. Many modern jobs require comfort with specific software, digital tools, or systems unfamiliar to people who worked in earlier technological eras. AARP's broader resources about skills development and training address this directly by pointing people toward learning opportunities. The organization also publishes information about which skills are most in-demand in current job markets, helping people prioritize their learning efforts.

Some older workers also face concerns about wage expectations and benefit structures. Employers may worry that experienced workers will expect higher salaries, while workers themselves may wonder whether they should accept lower pay than they earned previously. AARP's resources on salary negotiation and understanding employment contracts provide information on these topics, helping workers make informed decisions about job offers.

The job board also recognizes that people age 50 and older have diverse employment needs. Some
