Fix Your Leaking Faucet: A Homeowner's Guide

Understanding Common Faucet Leak Types

A leaking faucet is one of the most common household plumbing problems homeowners face. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that a single dripping faucet can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year—enough to fill nearly 180 bathtubs. Before you can fix your faucet, you need to understand what type of leak you're dealing with, as different faucet designs have different failure points.

The most noticeable type of leak is a steady drip from the spout. This typically means the seal inside the faucet has worn down. In many cases, the internal valve is damaged or mineral deposits have built up, preventing a tight seal. Another common leak pattern is water pooling around the base of the faucet, either under the sink or on the countertop. This usually indicates a problem with the connections at the base of the faucet or within the faucet body itself.

Leaks can also occur from the handle area, especially on older two-handle faucets. When water drips from where the handle connects to the faucet, the packing nut—a small component that seals the handle rod—may need tightening or replacement. Some faucets develop leaks at the connection points where the water supply lines attach. These leaks are often easier to repair than internal faucet problems.

Understanding your specific leak type helps you determine whether you can manage the repair yourself or need professional help. Different faucet styles—single-handle, two-handle, pull-down spray, or touchless—each have distinct internal structures and repair procedures.

Practical takeaway: Identify where the water is coming from. Is it dripping from the spout, leaking from the base, or coming from the handles? Write down what you observe, as this information helps guide your repair strategy.

Essential Tools and Materials You'll Need

Repairing a faucet doesn't require an extensive collection of specialized equipment. Most repairs can be completed with basic tools that many homeowners already have on hand. Having the right materials before you start prevents frustrating trips back to the hardware store mid-project.

The fundamental tools include an adjustable wrench (typically 8 to 10 inches), which handles most bolt sizes you'll encounter. A set of screwdrivers—both Phillips and flathead—covers different screw types. Many faucet repairs involve removing decorative caps or handles, so a small flat-head screwdriver works well for prying. Pliers, particularly slip-joint pliers or tongue-and-groove pliers, help you grip and turn components. A hex key set (Allen wrenches) is useful because modern single-handle faucets often use hex screws to secure the handle.

Beyond tools, you'll need specific repair materials. Faucet repair kits are available at most hardware stores for $15 to $50 and contain the common replacement parts: rubber washers, seals, O-rings, and valve seats. These kits typically match specific faucet brands or types. Plumber's grease (a silicone-based lubricant) prevents corrosion and helps components move smoothly. Teflon tape, also called plumber's tape, wraps around threaded connections to prevent leaks at connection points. Vinegar and a small brush help you clean mineral deposits from internal components.

Before purchasing anything, determine your faucet's brand and model. Check under the sink for markings, look at paperwork from your home purchase, or take a clear photo to show a hardware store employee. This information ensures you buy the correct repair kit.

Practical takeaway: Gather these tools in one place before starting: adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, pliers, hex keys, and a flashlight. Having everything within reach makes the repair process smoother and reduces frustration.

Step-by-Step Repair for a Dripping Spout

A dripping spout is the most common faucet problem, and it's also one of the most manageable repairs for homeowners to tackle. The steady drip you hear—often worse at night—usually means the valve seat or washer inside the faucet has deteriorated and no longer creates a watertight seal. The repair process differs slightly depending on whether your faucet is a two-handle, single-handle cartridge, or single-handle ball type.

For a traditional two-handle faucet, start by turning off the water supply. Look under the sink for shut-off valves and turn them clockwise until they stop. If you can't locate shut-off valves, you may need to shut off water at the main. Open the faucet to release remaining water pressure. Most two-handle faucets have a decorative cap or index button on top of each handle. Use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off this cap, which usually reveals a screw underneath. Remove the screw and lift off the handle. This exposes the packing nut, a hexagonal nut underneath. Use an adjustable wrench to turn this nut counterclockwise and remove it, then pull out the stem (the long metal rod inside). Once you remove the stem, you'll see the washer at the bottom and the valve seat. Replace the washer—this is typically the worn component causing your leak. You can purchase replacement washers individually or as part of a kit.

If the valve seat itself appears pitted or damaged, it should also be replaced. Reassemble everything in reverse order: insert the new stem, tighten the packing nut, reattach the handle, and replace the decorative cap. Turn the water back on slowly and test for leaks.

For single-handle cartridge faucets (common in many modern kitchens), the process is similar but slightly different. After turning off the water, pry off the handle cap to access the cartridge screw. Remove this screw and pull straight up on the handle. Underneath you'll find a large hex nut; remove this with your wrench. You can now pull out the cartridge—a plastic or metal cylinder containing all the valve components. Many hardware stores stock replacement cartridges specific to your faucet brand. Simply install the new cartridge, reassemble, and test.

Practical takeaway: Before disassembling anything, take photos of each step. These photos help you remember how components fit back together and serve as a reference if you get stuck.

Fixing Leaks at the Faucet Base and Connections

Water pooling around the base of your faucet or leaking from supply line connections requires a different troubleshooting approach than a dripping spout. These leaks occur where components connect and usually involve tightening connections or replacing seals. The good news is that many base leaks are simpler to address than internal faucet problems.

Start by identifying exactly where the water originates. Look under the sink with a flashlight. Is water coming from where the two supply lines (hot and cold) connect to the faucet? Is it pooling around the faucet base where it mounts to the sink or countertop? Is water coming from the connections where supply lines attach to the shut-off valves? These different locations require different solutions.

For leaking compression fittings—the connections where supply lines meet the faucet or shut-off valves—try tightening first. Use two wrenches: hold the fitting body steady with one wrench while turning the compression nut with another. Turn clockwise about one-quarter turn and test. Often this solves the problem. If tightening doesn't work, you'll need to replace the compression ferrule (the small metal ring inside the fitting). Turn off the water, disconnect the supply line by turning the compression nut counterclockwise, and inspect the ferrule. If it's cracked, flattened, or damaged, replace it with a new ferrule of the same size. Reassemble and test.

When water leaks from the faucet base itself—where it mounts to the sink—the problem usually lies with a worn seal or O-ring underneath. This repair requires removing the faucet entirely. Turn off the water supply, disconnect both supply lines, and remove the mounting nuts underneath the sink using a wrench. Carefully pull the faucet up and out. On the underside, you'll find rubber washers and O-rings. These typically need replacement. Check
