Find Your WiFi Password on Windows or Mac

Why You Might Need Your WiFi Password

There are plenty of reasons you might suddenly need to locate your WiFi password. Maybe you're setting up a new device—a laptop, tablet, or phone—and you can't remember what you entered when you first installed your router. Perhaps someone in your household is visiting and needs to connect their device to your network. Or you might be troubleshooting a connection problem and want to verify that you're using the correct credentials. Whatever the reason, knowing how to find this information on the computer you already use makes the process straightforward.

The tricky part is that your WiFi password isn't something you typically see displayed anywhere. Once you type it in during initial setup, your computer stores it and connects automatically. Most people never think about it again—until they need it. Both Windows and Mac operating systems store this information, but the steps to retrieve it differ between the two platforms.

One important note: your WiFi password is different from your router's admin password. The WiFi password is what you use to connect devices to your network. The admin password lets you log into the router itself to change settings. This guide focuses on finding your WiFi password specifically, which is the one you need most often.

Understanding where this information lives on your computer and how to access it means you won't be stuck when someone needs to connect. You also won't have to reset your entire router just to retrieve a password you've already set.

Finding Your WiFi Password on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Windows stores your WiFi passwords in a secure location called the Credential Manager. The steps are nearly identical whether you're using Windows 10 or Windows 11, though the menu locations have shifted slightly between versions. The process takes just a few minutes and requires no special software.

Start by right-clicking on the WiFi icon in your system tray—that's the small icon in the lower right corner of your screen that shows your network status. Look for an icon that resembles curved lines or bars stacked on top of each other. From the menu that appears, select "Manage known networks" or "WiFi" depending on your Windows version. This opens a settings window showing all the networks your computer has connected to previously.

Find the network name (called the SSID) for the WiFi you want the password for. Click on it, then look for an option that says "Manage" or "Forget." Click "Manage." A new window will open showing your network details. Look for a checkbox or button labeled "Show" next to the password field. Click it, and your password will appear in plain text. Windows may ask you to confirm your user account password before revealing it—this is a security feature protecting your network credentials.

If that method doesn't work on your specific Windows version, there's an alternative route through Settings. Open your Settings app, go to "Network & Internet," then "WiFi." Scroll down to "Manage known networks" and follow the same steps as above. This method works reliably across most Windows versions released in the last five years.

For older Windows 7 or 8 systems, the process is slightly different. You'll need to open the Network and Sharing Center, click "Manage wireless networks," right-click your network, select "Properties," then navigate to the "Security" tab where your password appears—though it will be masked with dots unless you check the "Show characters" box.

Finding Your WiFi Password on macOS

Apple's approach to storing WiFi passwords involves the Keychain—a secure storage system that keeps passwords and other sensitive information safe. The good news is that retrieving your WiFi password from Keychain takes fewer steps than the Windows process and works the same way regardless of which recent macOS version you're running.

Open Spotlight Search by pressing Command + Space, then type "Keychain Access" and press Enter. This launches the Keychain Access application—a utility that comes built into every Mac. Once it's open, you'll see a search box in the upper right. Type the name of your WiFi network (its SSID) into this search box. The network should appear in the list below.

Double-click on your network name to open its details window. A small dialog box will appear showing information about that network connection. At the bottom of this dialog, you'll see a checkbox labeled "Show password." Click this checkbox. Your Mac will prompt you to enter your computer's admin password—this is the password you use to log into your Mac itself, not your WiFi password. Type it in and click "Allow." Your WiFi password now appears in the "Show password" field in plain text.

One thing to note: if you've changed your admin password since you last connected to this WiFi network, you'll need to use your current admin password, not an old one. If you're not sure what your current admin password is, you may need to use the account recovery options in System Preferences to reset it first.

This same Keychain method works whether you're on an older version of macOS or the latest release. The interface has remained relatively unchanged, so the steps you follow today will work on your Mac for years to come. It's one of the more stable features of Apple's operating system.

What to Do When You Can't Remember Your Computer Password

Both Windows and Mac require you to verify your identity before revealing your WiFi password. Windows asks for your computer's user account password; Mac asks for your admin password. This creates a problem if you can't remember your computer password—you can't proceed to see your WiFi password.

For Windows users, there are password recovery options built into the system. If you set up a password hint when you created your account, that hint will appear on the login screen to jog your memory. If you set up security questions, you may be able to answer them to reset your password. If your Windows account is connected to a Microsoft account, you can reset your password through the Microsoft website from another device and then use that new password to log back into your computer.

Mac users in the same situation should restart their computer while holding Command + S to enter Single User Mode. From there, you can reset your admin password using command-line tools. This process is more technical than Windows recovery but well-documented in Apple's support materials. Alternatively, if you set up Recovery Mode and created another admin account, you can log in with that other account and reset the primary account's password from System Preferences.

If all else fails, both Windows and Mac allow you to reset your entire computer by reinstalling the operating system. This is a more drastic step that erases everything on your drive, so it should be a last resort. Before going down that path, consider checking if anyone else who uses the computer remembers the password, or contact the person who originally set it up.

A practical takeaway: when you create a new user account on your computer, take a moment to write down your password somewhere safe—a physical notebook, a password manager, or even a note in your phone. This simple step prevents password recovery headaches later.

Understanding Router Password Versus WiFi Password

A common source of confusion is the difference between your WiFi password and your router's admin password. These are two completely separate credentials, and knowing which one you need prevents a lot of frustration.

Your WiFi password is what you enter when you connect a device to your network for the first time. It's the one you'll need to share with guests, use on your phone, or enter on a new laptop. This is the password that your Windows or Mac computer stores, and the one this guide helps you retrieve. It's sometimes called the "network password" or the password for your "SSID" (Service Set Identifier—the technical name for your network's broadcast name).

Your router's admin password is completely different. It's used to log into the router's settings page—usually by typing an address like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into a web browser. From there, you can change your WiFi password, adjust security settings, rename your network, or set up advanced features. Most people never need their router's admin password after the initial setup. The default admin password often comes printed on a sticker on the back of the router itself.

Confusing the two is a common mistake. You might think you've forgotten your WiFi password when really you're thinking of your router's admin password, or vice versa. If someone on your network has changed the admin password and you don't know the new one, you can reset the router to factory settings by pressing and holding a
