Find Your WiFi Password on Windows Mac or Linux

Why You Might Need Your WiFi Password

Knowing your WiFi password matters more than many people realize. Whether you're setting up a new device, troubleshooting a connection problem, or helping a family member get online, having your password available can save significant time and frustration. The tricky part is that once you've connected a device to your network, the operating system stores that password behind the scenes—out of plain sight.

There are several practical reasons you might find yourself needing this information. Perhaps someone asks to use your internet and you've forgotten what you set the password to. Maybe you're replacing an old router and need to reconnect all your devices with the same network credentials. You could be dealing with a device that keeps asking for authentication, or you're simply trying to document your setup in case of emergency. Whatever the reason, Windows, Mac, and Linux all store this information, and it's retrievable through their respective settings and tools.

The process differs significantly across operating systems, which is why having platform-specific instructions matters. What takes three clicks on one system might require opening the terminal on another. Understanding which approach applies to your computer prevents wasted time trying methods that don't fit your setup. This guide walks through the actual steps for each operating system, focusing on the most straightforward methods available.

Key takeaway: Locating your stored WiFi password is a normal part of device management. Each operating system has built-in tools designed for this purpose—you're not bypassing security or doing anything unusual by retrieving your own network information.

Finding Your WiFi Password on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Windows stores WiFi passwords in its network settings, and retrieving them is straightforward if you know where to look. The process involves accessing your network connections through the Settings app, then viewing the properties of your connected network. Modern versions of Windows made this slightly easier than older editions, but the concept remains the same across Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Start by clicking on the WiFi icon in your system tray (bottom right corner of your screen). You'll see a list of available networks, with your currently connected network marked as "Connected." Right-click directly on your connected network name and select "Properties" from the menu that appears. This opens a small window showing various network details. Look for a field labeled "Network security key"—this is your WiFi password, displayed in plain text by default.

If you can't see the password in plain text and it appears as dots or asterisks, Windows is hiding it for security. Click on the "Show" button or checkbox next to the security key field to reveal the actual characters. This requires that you're logged into an administrator account on that computer, but most personal computers operate under admin accounts by default.

An alternative approach uses the Settings menu directly. Navigate to Settings > Network & internet > WiFi > Manage known networks. Find your network in the list and click on it, then select "Properties." Again, look for the "Network security key" field and click "Show" to reveal your password. Some users find this method more intuitive because it centralizes all network management in one location.

If you encounter a network that doesn't display its password (occasionally happening with enterprise or hidden networks), it may be stored with restricted access. In these cases, contacting your network administrator or checking your router's admin panel becomes necessary—this guide covers that alternative below.

Key takeaway: Windows makes retrieving your stored password a simple Settings menu task. The "Network security key" field in your network properties contains exactly what you're looking for, and the "Show" button reveals it when needed.

Retrieving Your WiFi Password on Mac Systems

Mac users have two reliable methods for finding stored WiFi passwords, and both are faster than many people expect. The graphical approach uses the Keychain utility, while the terminal approach offers a single-command solution. Most Mac users find the Keychain method more intuitive, but either approach works equally well.

To use Keychain, open Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access. In the search box at the top right, type the name of your WiFi network exactly as it appears in your WiFi menu. When your network appears in the results, double-click on it to open its details. A window will appear showing your network information. Near the bottom, you'll see a checkbox labeled "Show password." Click this checkbox, and your Mac will ask for your administrator password (the same one you use to log into your computer). Enter it, and your WiFi password appears on screen.

If the Keychain method feels confusing, the terminal approach is actually simpler for many people. Open Applications > Utilities > Terminal and paste this command: security find-generic-password -wa [Your_Network_Name] (replacing [Your_Network_Name] with your actual network name). Press Enter, provide your administrator password when prompted, and your password displays in the terminal window.

One important note: Mac systems may label your network slightly differently than you expect. If your network is named "Apartment3-5G," for example, you need to use exactly that string in your search. If the command or search returns no results, double-check your network name by clicking the WiFi icon in your menu bar.

Older Mac systems (pre-2016) occasionally store this information differently, but the Keychain method works for virtually all modern Macs running current operating systems. If you're using an unusually old machine, the terminal command may need slight adjustment, though it typically works as written.

Key takeaway: Mac's Keychain system exists specifically to store and retrieve passwords securely. Your WiFi password is stored there like any other credential, and retrieving it is a legitimate maintenance task that requires your administrator verification.

Accessing Your WiFi Password Through Linux Terminal

Linux handles network storage differently depending on which desktop environment and network manager you're running, but most modern Linux distributions use one of two standard approaches. Understanding which one your system uses determines which command to run, though the process remains relatively straightforward.

Most contemporary Linux systems use NetworkManager, which stores WiFi passwords in a configuration directory. Open your terminal and run this command: sudo cat /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/[Your_Network_Name] (replacing [Your_Network_Name] with your actual network name). You'll need to provide your sudo password, then the file contents display. Look for a line labeled "psk=" followed by your password. The stored password is typically plain text in this file.

If that path doesn't work on your system, try: sudo nmcli device wifi show This command displays information about all nearby networks, including some stored credentials depending on your setup. It may not show the actual password but can confirm your network is recognized.

Users running older distributions or those using different network managers (like Wicd or connman) may need to search in different directories. The most common alternative is /etc/wpa_supplicant/, which stores network information for WPA-protected networks. The command sudo grep -r "ssid=" /etc/ searches your entire configuration for network names, helping you locate where your specific network is stored.

An important consideration for Linux users: this approach requires understanding your network configuration and having comfortable access to the terminal. Unlike Windows and Mac, Linux doesn't provide a universal graphical interface for this task across all distributions. However, the terminal commands remain consistent across the vast majority of modern systems.

Key takeaway: Linux stores network passwords in configuration files designed for this purpose. Accessing them requires terminal commands, but these are standard operations that any Linux user should feel comfortable performing on their own system.

Recovering Your Password From Your Router's Admin Panel

If you can't locate your password through your operating system, your router itself stores this information and allows you to view or reset it through its admin panel. This approach works regardless of operating system and sometimes proves faster than searching through system settings. Every router manufacturer provides access to this panel, though the exact steps vary slightly by brand.

Start by identifying your router's IP address. On any connected device, open a web browser and navigate to a common router address: most home routers use either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Type one of these into your address bar and press Enter. You'll be directed to your router's login page. If neither address works, you can find your router's specific address
