Find Your IP Address Quick Reference Guide

What an IP Address Actually Is and Why You Might Need It

An IP address is a numerical label assigned to every device that connects to the internet. Think of it like a mailing address for your computer, phone, or tablet—it tells other devices and servers on the internet where to send information back to you. Without IP addresses, the internet wouldn't know how to route data packets to the right place.

These addresses come in two versions. IPv4 addresses look like this: 192.168.1.1 (four numbers separated by periods, each number between 0 and 255). IPv6 addresses look more complex: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 (they use letters and numbers). Most of what you encounter online still uses IPv4, though IPv6 is becoming more common as the world runs out of available IPv4 addresses.

You might need to find your IP address for several practical reasons. If you're troubleshooting internet problems with your internet service provider, they'll often ask for it. If you're setting up a home network printer or security camera, you may need to connect to it using its IP address. Some online games or applications require knowing your IP address for network configuration. Network administrators managing offices or schools need to track which devices are on their network.

There's also the distinction between your public IP address (the one your internet service provider assigns, visible to the outside internet) and your private IP address (used within your home or office network). Your public IP is what websites see when you visit them. Your private IP is what devices on your local network use to talk to each other.

Practical takeaway: Understanding what an IP address is helps you know whether you need your public IP (for internet service issues) or your private IP (for home network device setup).

Finding Your IP Address on Windows Computers

Windows computers offer several methods to locate your IP address, ranging from the most straightforward to more detailed options depending on what information you need.

The quickest method on Windows 10 and Windows 11 is through Settings. Click the Start button, then type "Settings" and open it. Navigate to Network & internet, then select Wi-Fi or Ethernet depending on your connection type. Click on your network name (for Wi-Fi) or "Change adapter options" (for Ethernet). Your IP address appears on the screen, typically listed as "IPv4 address."

If you prefer using the Command Prompt for more detailed information, press Windows key + R, type "cmd" and press Enter. In the black command window that opens, type ipconfig and press Enter. This displays all your network adapters and their IP addresses. You'll see "IPv4 Address" showing your private IP address on your local network. If you only want your public IP address (the one visible to the wider internet), type ipconfig /all instead for more comprehensive information.

For the public IP address that websites see, Windows users can open any web browser and search "what is my IP" or "my IP address." Multiple free websites display this information instantly. These sites use your browser connection to determine what IP address is reaching their server.

Windows 11 users also have a notification area method: click the network icon in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar, then click on your network connection name. A panel opens showing connection details including your IP address.

Practical takeaway: For routine home network setup, use Settings for simplicity; for troubleshooting with your ISP, use Command Prompt for complete details; for checking how you appear to the internet, use an IP-checking website.

Finding Your IP Address on Mac, iPhone, and iPad

Apple devices have their own paths to finding IP addresses, though the overall principle remains the same—you're looking for how your device is identified on the network.

On a Mac running any recent macOS version, click the Apple menu and select "System Preferences" or "System Settings." Click "Network" in the left sidebar. Select your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) from the list. Your private IP address displays prominently in the window, usually labeled as "IPv4 Address" or similar. If you're on an older Mac, the process is identical—Network settings have remained consistent across macOS versions.

For a more detailed view on Mac, you can hold the Option key and click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar. This shows additional network information including your IP address without needing to open System Settings.

Finding your IP on iPhone or iPad requires fewer steps since Apple keeps these settings consolidated. Open Settings, tap "Wi-Fi" (or "Cellular" if checking mobile data), then tap the information icon (i) next to your connected network. Your IP address appears under "IP Address" in the DHCP section. For the public IP address on any Apple device, simply open Safari and search "what is my IP."

One important note for Apple users: if you've enabled "Private Wi-Fi Address" in your Wi-Fi settings on newer iPhones and iPads, you'll see a different address than your device's actual IP on your network. This privacy feature randomizes your MAC address, but the IP address shown in Settings is still what matters for most network tasks.

Practical takeaway: Mac users find IP addresses in Network settings; iPhone and iPad users check Wi-Fi settings; all Apple users can verify their public IP through any web browser search.

Finding Your IP Address on Android and Linux Devices

Android phones and tablets and Linux computers each have straightforward methods for locating IP addresses, though they differ from Windows and Mac approaches.

On Android devices, open Settings and navigate to "About phone" or "About tablet" (location varies by manufacturer). Look for "Status" or "Device information." Some Android versions display IP address directly here. If not, go back to Settings and find "Network & internet" or "Connections," tap your Wi-Fi network, and select "Manage" or the network details. Your private IP address appears on this screen, usually listed as "IP Address" or "IPv4."

For Android phones connected to mobile data, you can find the IP address assigned by your cellular provider in a similar location within "About phone" settings, though this information is less commonly needed for everyday use.

Linux users have multiple options depending on their desktop environment. The command-line method works across all Linux distributions: open a terminal and type hostname -I to display your IP address, or ip addr for more detailed network information. If you prefer a graphical interface, most Linux distributions have a Settings or Control Center application. Look for "Network" settings, where your connected network and IP address display similarly to Windows or Mac.

Linux server administrators who access machines remotely through terminal sessions can type ifconfig (older systems) or ip a (newer systems) to see all network interfaces and their assigned IP addresses. This is particularly useful for managing multiple servers or devices on a network.

Practical takeaway: Android users navigate to network settings to find their IP; Linux desktop users check system settings or open a terminal; Linux administrators use command-line tools for rapid information gathering.

Understanding Public versus Private IP Addresses and When You Need Each

Your public IP address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider and is visible to every website, service, and server you connect to online. This is the IP address that appears when someone tries to trace where a connection comes from. It's the address websites log when you visit them. It changes periodically—sometimes daily, sometimes monthly, depending on your ISP's configuration. Most home internet users have a "dynamic" public IP that changes over time, while businesses often pay for "static" public IPs that remain constant.

Your private IP address exists only within your local network—your home network, office network, or school network. These addresses start with 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x to 172.31.x.x. They're reserved specifically for private networks and cannot be routed across the public internet. Devices on your home Wi-Fi use private IP addresses to communicate with each other. Your printer, smart TV, security camera, and computer all have private IPs within your network, but none
