Find E85 Fuel Stations Near Your Location

Understanding E85 Fuel and Why Location Matters

E85 is a fuel blend made of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. It's different from the regular unleaded gasoline you find at most pumps, which typically contains only 10% ethanol. This higher ethanol content means E85 can only be used in vehicles specifically designed to run on it—these are called "flex-fuel vehicles" or FFVs. Not every car can use E85 safely, which is why finding stations that carry it requires some different thinking than locating a regular gas station.

The geography of E85 availability varies significantly across the United States. Some regions, particularly in the Midwest where corn ethanol production is a major industry, have hundreds of E85 stations within a reasonable driving distance. Other areas, especially in certain parts of the Northeast, Southeast, and Mountain West, may have very few or none. This uneven distribution means that where you live, work, or travel matters a lot when deciding whether E85 is a practical fuel choice for your vehicle.

One reason E85 stations cluster in certain areas relates to how the fuel supply chain works. Ethanol production facilities are concentrated in corn-growing regions, making it cheaper and more practical for stations in those areas to stock E85. Proximity to refineries and distribution hubs also influences which stations carry alternative fuels. Understanding this geographic reality helps you assess whether searching for E85 is worthwhile for your situation.

E85 typically costs less per gallon than regular gasoline, sometimes 30 to 50 cents cheaper depending on market conditions. However, E85 has lower energy content than gasoline, meaning your vehicle will use more of it to travel the same distance—usually consuming about 20 to 30% more fuel by volume. These two factors partially offset each other, so comparing pump prices alone doesn't tell the whole story about whether E85 saves money.

Practical takeaway: Before spending time searching for E85 stations, verify that your vehicle is flex-fuel compatible. Check your owner's manual or look for an "FFV" badge on your vehicle. If you don't have a flex-fuel vehicle, locating E85 stations won't be useful. If you do have one, understanding regional availability patterns helps you decide whether searching is worthwhile.

Using Online Station Locator Tools and Apps

Several established platforms and tools make locating E85 stations straightforward. The U.S. Department of Energy maintains the Alternative Fuels Data Center at fueleconomy.gov, which includes a station locator map. This tool lets you enter your address and shows nearby E85 stations with specific details like hours, amenities, and station contact information. The data comes from multiple sources, though like any database, it may occasionally include outdated information.

GasBuddy, a popular fuel price comparison app, also lists E85 stations on its map alongside conventional gas stations. You can search by location and filter results to show only E85 pumps. The app allows users to report prices and station status updates, which can help you find current pricing information. However, user-submitted data means information accuracy can vary depending on how recently the station was updated.

Fuel retailers that operate nationwide chains sometimes maintain their own locator tools on their websites. Love's Travel Stops, Speedway stations, and other chains that offer E85 often have store locators where you can find which locations in your area carry the fuel. These branded tools tend to be current since the companies update them directly, but they only show their own locations, not competitors.

Mobile apps focused specifically on alternative fuels, such as PlugShare (which includes E85 alongside electric charging), provide another resource. These specialized apps often have community features where drivers can share real-time information about station conditions and fuel availability. Some apps allow filtering by fuel type, which makes it faster to narrow results to just E85 stations rather than scrolling through all alternatives.

When using any locator tool, note that online maps may sometimes show stations that no longer carry E85, especially if a station switched fuel suppliers or discontinued the product. This is why it's worth confirming availability before driving to an unfamiliar station, particularly if it's more than a few miles away. A quick phone call to the station can confirm they currently stock E85.

Practical takeaway: Start with the U.S. Department of Energy's station locator for the most comprehensive database, then cross-reference results with GasBuddy or branded retailer apps. Calling ahead to confirm current E85 availability at less-familiar stations saves a wasted trip, especially in areas where stations may carry the fuel sporadically.

Identifying Station Types and Understanding Availability Patterns

E85 stations fall into several categories, and understanding the differences helps explain why you might find some stations but not others in your area. Convenience stores and gas stations operated by regional chains often carry E85, particularly in the Midwest and Great Plains. These smaller retailers usually have fewer pumps overall but dedicate one or two to E85. Many are open during standard business hours, though some operate 24 hours.

Travel centers and truck stops represent another major category of E85 providers. Love's, Pilot Flying J, and TA/Petro locations frequently stock E85 because trucking fleets increasingly use it. These large facilities typically have many pumps and are built along highways, making them useful for longer trips. They're usually open around the clock, which differs from smaller station networks.

Costco stations in states like Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota carry E85 for members, though membership is required to purchase fuel. Some Costco locations in other regions have the capability but choose not to stock it based on local demand. This pattern reflects how retailers make decisions about which fuels to carry based on projected customer demand in their area.

Rural agricultural cooperatives sometimes operate E85 stations, particularly in farming regions. These are less common than commercial gas station E85 pumps but can be worth knowing about if you live in farm country. They're sometimes open to the public but may have limited hours or require membership arrangements.

Availability patterns show clear regional variations. In Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and other major corn states, finding an E85 station within 10 miles is often realistic. In urban areas outside the Midwest, finding even one E85 station in a 20-mile radius may be challenging. Coastal states and regions far from ethanol production hubs typically have minimal E85 availability, sometimes with just a handful of stations serving the entire state.

Seasonal fluctuations can affect E85 availability at some stations. In very cold climates, some retailers reduce or suspend E85 service during winter months because ethanol-blended fuels require special handling in freezing temperatures. If you live in a cold region, confirm that your local E85 station operates year-round before relying on it.

Practical takeaway: Note the station type (convenience store, travel center, or cooperative) when you find E85 options, because this affects hours of operation and reliability. Travel centers and truck stops tend to have the most predictable availability, while smaller stations may have variable supply. If you find limited local options, knowing the type helps you plan fueling stops accordingly.

Evaluating Station Details Beyond Location

Once you locate E85 stations, comparing them involves more than just distance. Pump accessibility matters—some stations only have E85 at certain pump islands, which can affect how easily you can fuel up during busy times. A few stations restrict E85 pumps to specific hours or limit use to fleet vehicles, so confirming this beforehand prevents frustration.

Payment options vary by station. Most accept standard credit and debit cards at the pump, but some older stations or rural locations may only accept cash or require paying inside. Mobile payment options like Apple Pay or Google Pay work at many stations but not all. If you prefer a particular payment method, confirm the station accommodates it.

Price tracking gives you a sense of whether one station's pricing is reasonable compared to nearby alternatives. Fuel price aggregator apps and websites like GasBuddy allow you to compare E85 prices across stations in your area, though prices change frequently. Checking prices before your next fill-up might reveal whether traveling slightly further to a cheaper station makes sense, depending on how much fuel you're buying.

Station amenities and safety features are worth considering, especially if you fuel up regularly at a particular location. Is the station well-lit and staffed during your usual fueling times? Are the pumps in
