Find and Rent a U-Haul Van Near You

Understanding U-Haul Van Rental Options

U-Haul is one of the largest vehicle rental companies in the United States, operating since 1945. The company maintains a network of over 21,000 locations across North America. U-Haul offers several types of vans designed for different moving and hauling needs, ranging from smaller cargo vans to full-size moving vans.

U-Haul vans come in various sizes. The cargo van, often called the Cargo Van or Pickup Van, is designed for smaller moves or hauling projects. The company also offers the 10-foot truck, 15-foot truck, 20-foot truck, and 26-foot truck options. Each size accommodates different volumes of items. For example, a 10-foot truck can hold approximately 3,500 pounds and is suitable for studio apartments or small office moves. A 20-foot truck holds around 8,000 pounds and works well for two to three-bedroom homes.

Beyond standard moving vans, U-Haul provides specialized equipment rental. This includes trailers, such as enclosed cargo trailers and utility trailers, which you can tow behind your own vehicle. The company also rents equipment like dollies, hand trucks, furniture pads, and boxes. Many customers combine a rental van with these accessories to complete their projects.

Pricing varies based on distance, time of year, and current demand. U-Haul uses a one-way rental system, meaning you can pick up a van in one location and return it at another. This differs from round-trip rentals where you return the vehicle to the original pickup point. Understanding these options helps you determine which rental type suits your situation.

Practical Takeaway: Before searching for a rental, determine the size of van you need by estimating the volume of items you're moving or hauling. Smaller projects may only require a cargo van, while larger moves might need a 20-foot or 26-foot truck. This clarity will make your search more efficient.

How to Search for U-Haul Locations Near You

Finding a U-Haul rental location near you involves several straightforward methods. The most direct approach is visiting uhaul.com, the company's official website. On the homepage, you'll find a search bar where you can enter your pickup location. The website accepts various input formats: a street address, city name, or ZIP code all work equally well.

U-Haul's location search tool displays results on a map and in a list format. The map view shows nearby locations with markers indicating distance from your search point. The list view provides specific address information, phone numbers, and hours of operation for each location. Many locations operate with extended hours, including weekend availability, though some independent dealers may have more limited schedules.

In addition to the website, U-Haul maintains a mobile application available for iOS and Android devices. The app includes GPS functionality that can automatically detect your current location and show nearby rental centers. This proves particularly useful if you're searching while traveling or away from home.

You can also call U-Haul's customer service line at 1-800-468-4285. A representative can discuss your needs, confirm equipment availability at specific locations, and provide directions. Phone support is available seven days a week. If you prefer working with independent dealers, U-Haul franchises operate at many hardware stores, auto parts retailers, and convenience stores. These locations follow U-Haul's pricing and inventory but may have different hours than company-operated centers.

Distance matters when choosing a location. U-Haul typically suggests picking up at the location closest to your starting point if you're making a one-way move. This reduces travel time to your rental and ensures you're comfortable with the pickup location before your reservation date.

Practical Takeaway: Use the website or mobile app to identify multiple nearby locations, then compare their hours and equipment availability. Call ahead if you need to confirm that specific van sizes are in stock for your desired rental dates, especially during peak moving season from May through September.

Comparing Prices and Booking Your Rental

U-Haul pricing operates on a transparent model with several cost components. The primary charge is a base rate, which varies by vehicle size and rental distance. For example, a one-way rental of a 10-foot truck from New York to Boston might cost differently than renting the same truck locally. Additionally, mileage may or may not be included depending on the rental type. U-Haul offers both unlimited mileage packages and pay-per-mile options. Understanding which structure benefits you requires calculating your expected distance before booking.

Equipment rental adds to your total cost. U-Haul charges for dollies (typically $5 to $10 per item), furniture pads (around $0.50 to $1.00 each), and boxes (ranging from $1.50 to $4.00 depending on size). Supplies like tape, bubble wrap, and furniture covers are available for separate fees. These costs accumulate quickly for large moves, so budgeting for supplies at the start helps avoid surprises.

Pricing fluctuates based on season and demand. Summer months (May through September) represent peak moving season, and rental rates increase accordingly. Booking during off-peak times, such as winter months or mid-week, often results in lower prices. U-Haul's website displays real-time pricing when you enter your pickup date, location, and desired van size.

To book a rental, enter your pickup and return information on uhaul.com or through the mobile app. The system shows available vehicles at your chosen location and displays the total rental cost. You'll need to provide a valid driver's license and credit card. Reservations can be modified or canceled online before your rental date, typically without penalty if done at least 24 hours in advance, though this policy can vary.

Comparing prices across different dates and locations is worthwhile. Sometimes picking up a van one day earlier or later results in significant savings. Similarly, if you have flexibility on location, comparing rates at multiple nearby centers can reveal discounts. U-Haul occasionally offers promotional codes that reduce rental costs, often found through email newsletters or special promotions.

Practical Takeaway: Before finalizing your booking, calculate the total cost including the base rental, mileage (if applicable), equipment needs, and supplies. Compare pricing for different dates and nearby locations. Look for promotional offers that might reduce your overall expense.

Requirements and Preparation Before Pickup

Renting a U-Haul van requires meeting several basic requirements. You must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license. U-Haul accepts licenses from all U.S. states and Canadian provinces. International visitors with a valid passport and International Driving Permit can also rent vehicles. The credit card you provide must match the name on your driver's license and have sufficient available credit to cover the rental, deposits, and any potential damage charges.

Before your pickup appointment, prepare your documentation. Bring your driver's license and the credit card used for the reservation. If someone other than the person who made the reservation will be driving the vehicle, that person must also present a valid driver's license. U-Haul may decline to rent to drivers with certain traffic violations or license suspensions, though policies can vary by location and rental type.

Inspect your rental thoroughly during pickup. U-Haul staff will conduct a walk-around inspection with you, documenting the vehicle's condition. Review this inspection report carefully and point out any existing damage before leaving the lot. Taking photos or video of the van's interior and exterior provides additional documentation. This step is crucial because you're responsible for any new damage that occurs during your rental period.

Understand the fuel policy before driving away. U-Haul typically requires you to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas. If you return it empty, U-Haul charges for fuel at a rate higher than market prices. Some locations offer pre-purchase fuel options where you pay for a full tank upfront at a fixed rate. Calculating whether this saves money depends on current gas prices and how much fuel you'll actually use.

Load your rental appropriately. Place heavier items toward the front of the cargo area and distribute weight evenly from side to side. Secure items with rope or straps to prevent shifting during transit. Never exceed the vehicle's weight capacity, as this affects braking, handling, and tire safety.
