Find and Rent a Boom Truck Locally

Understanding Boom Truck Categories and Specifications

A boom truck is a specialized vehicle that combines a truck chassis with a hydraulic crane or boom mounted on the bed. The boom extends and lifts loads, making these vehicles essential for construction, utility work, tree removal, and maintenance tasks. Understanding the different types helps you determine what equipment suits your project needs.

Boom trucks are categorized primarily by lifting capacity, which ranges from 5 tons to 100+ tons. A 5-ton to 15-ton boom truck works well for light commercial tasks like installing signage, replacing air conditioning units, or placing small equipment on rooftops. These smaller models typically have a reach of 40 to 50 feet and are easier to maneuver in urban environments. Mid-range boom trucks, rated for 25 to 50 tons, handle heavier loads such as construction materials, HVAC systems, or utility pole work. They offer reach distances of 60 to 100 feet. Heavy-duty boom trucks exceeding 50 tons lift massive loads for industrial projects, bridge work, or large equipment installation.

Beyond capacity and reach, boom trucks vary by boom type. Straight booms extend in a single direction and suit straightforward vertical or near-vertical lifts. Articulating booms have two or more segments that fold and bend, providing greater flexibility around obstacles. Knuckle booms feature a joint that allows precise positioning of loads, particularly useful in tight spaces or when placing materials at specific angles.

Practical takeaway: Document your project requirements, including the weight of the heaviest load, the height where it needs to go, and any obstacles like power lines or buildings nearby. This information helps rental companies recommend the right boom truck size and type.

Where to Search for Local Boom Truck Rentals

Finding boom truck rental options in your area involves exploring multiple types of rental businesses and suppliers. The rental landscape includes national chains, regional equipment companies, local heavy equipment dealers, and specialized crane rental services. Each source offers different advantages depending on your project timeline, budget, and specific needs.

National equipment rental companies like United Rentals, Sunbelt Rentals, and Herc Rentals operate hundreds of locations across the country. These businesses maintain large fleets of boom trucks in various sizes and configurations. To locate them, search online using your city name plus "boom truck rental" or visit their websites and use location finders. National chains often provide standardized pricing, consistent maintenance standards, and the ability to rent equipment in one location and return it in another. However, availability can be limited during peak construction seasons, and you may have less negotiating power on pricing.

Regional equipment rental companies serve specific geographic areas and often have deeper local knowledge. These businesses may have more personalized customer service and potentially more flexible terms. Search directories like the American Rental Association's member database or local chamber of commerce listings. Getting phone numbers and calling directly often yields better results than relying solely on online searches.

Heavy equipment dealers and construction equipment suppliers frequently offer boom truck rentals alongside equipment sales. These companies maintain their own fleets and may specialize in specific industries like utility work or tree service. Local construction supply stores can often recommend dealers in your region. Specialized crane and rigging companies focus exclusively on lifting equipment and may have the most experienced staff for complex or unusual projects.

Additional search strategies include contacting local construction companies, asking for referrals from contractors you know, checking classified ads and industry marketplaces, and exploring trade-specific platforms like equipment rental apps. Google Maps searches for "crane rental near me" or "boom truck rental" show nearby options with contact information, hours, and customer reviews.

Practical takeaway: Create a spreadsheet listing at least five potential rental companies with their contact information, hours of operation, and general pricing. This comparison approach saves time and helps you negotiate better rates.

Understanding Rental Pricing and Cost Factors

Boom truck rental costs vary significantly based on equipment size, rental duration, location, and additional services. Understanding pricing structures helps you budget accurately and recognize reasonable quotes from different vendors. Most companies quote pricing using daily, weekly, or monthly rates, with discounts for longer rental periods.

Daily rental rates for small boom trucks (5-15 tons) typically range from $300 to $600 per day in most U.S. markets, though urban areas may charge more. Mid-sized units (25-50 tons) generally cost $500 to $1,200 daily. Heavy-duty boom trucks (75+ tons) can exceed $2,000 per day. Weekly rates usually offer 20 to 30 percent discounts off daily rates, and monthly rates may provide 40 to 50 percent savings. For example, a boom truck renting for $400 daily might cost $2,400 per week (43 percent savings) or $8,000 per month (33 percent savings).

Several factors influence your final cost. Geographic location significantly impacts pricing—equipment rents for more in major metropolitan areas than in rural regions. Seasonal demand affects rates; summer construction season brings higher prices than winter months. Delivery and pickup fees, separate from rental rates, range from $150 to $500+ depending on distance from the rental yard to your site. Operator fees apply if you need the rental company to provide a trained boom truck operator; these typically add $50 to $150 per hour. Insurance, fuel surcharges, and mileage charges may also apply, though many companies include fuel in their base rental rate.

Specific project requirements increase costs. Unusual operating hours (nights, weekends, holidays) often incur surcharges of 25 to 50 percent above standard rates. Working in difficult terrain, extreme weather, or at heights requiring special certifications adds costs. Some companies charge extra for specific positioning requirements or for jobs requiring spotters and safety personnel.

Hidden costs to anticipate include permits for street closures or sidewalk use, traffic control personnel, site preparation to ensure the truck can access your location safely, and potential damage waivers. Understanding what's included in the quoted rental rate prevents surprise charges. Request itemized quotes showing equipment rental, delivery, insurance, and any additional fees separately.

Practical takeaway: When requesting quotes, provide companies with specific details: exact boom truck capacity needed, rental dates and times, delivery location, site access conditions, and whether you need an operator. More detailed inquiries yield more accurate pricing and reveal all associated costs upfront.

Scheduling and Availability Considerations

Securing a boom truck requires advance planning, particularly during busy construction seasons. Understanding how rental companies manage schedules and what factors affect availability helps you reserve equipment when you need it. Most companies recommend contacting them at least one to two weeks before your project start date, though peak season demands may require even longer notice.

Rental availability fluctuates based on season and day of week. Summer months from May through September represent peak construction season, when contractors compete for limited equipment. If your project isn't time-sensitive, scheduling during fall or winter months often means better availability and lower rates. Mid-week scheduling (Tuesday through Thursday) typically offers better availability than weekends, which many contractors prefer to avoid overtime charges.

Booking procedures vary by company. Some require online reservations through their website or app, while others prefer phone calls to secure availability. Getting a confirmed reservation in writing—whether via email, contract, or written confirmation—protects both parties. This documentation should specify equipment type and serial number, rental dates and times, delivery address, and all associated costs and fees.

Cancellation policies differ significantly among rental companies. Some charge cancellation fees if you cancel within a certain timeframe (often 48 hours), while others may have more flexible policies. Understanding these terms before committing prevents unexpected charges if your project timeline shifts. Some companies allow rescheduling without penalties if you provide sufficient notice.

Delivery timing affects your project schedule. Most rental companies deliver during business hours on weekdays, though emergency or off-hours delivery is sometimes available at additional cost. Ask about delivery windows—some provide specific one-hour or two-hour windows, while others offer broader timeframes like "morning" or "afternoon." Confirm when the rental period begins: some companies charge from the time the truck leaves their yard, others from delivery arrival, and still others from the next business day.

Planning for weather delays is important. If rain, snow, or high winds make boom truck operation unsafe, your rental company may delay the scheduled work. Discuss how the company handles weather delays—whether the rental period extends without additional charge or if fees continue during delays. This understanding prevents budget surprises.
