Deleting iPhone Podcasts: A How-To Guide

Why You Might Want to Delete Podcasts From Your iPhone

Podcasts can take up surprising amounts of storage space on your iPhone. A single episode of a popular podcast like "The Daily" from the New York Times runs about 30-40 MB, while longer-form shows like "Joe Rogan Experience" episodes can exceed 500 MB each. If you listen to five or six podcasts regularly and keep months of episodes downloaded, you could easily be looking at several gigabytes of storage consumed.

Storage matters because iPhones don't let you swap out memory cards like older Android phones. You get whatever storage capacity you bought, and that's it. Whether you have a 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB model, every megabyte counts. When your phone runs low on space, it can slow down performance, prevent you from taking photos, or stop you from installing app updates.

Beyond storage, there's the organizational benefit. If you subscribe to 15 podcasts but only actively listen to 5, your podcast app becomes cluttered. Old episodes pile up. Finding the show you actually want to hear becomes harder. Many people find that deleting episodes they've finished listening to—or shows they've stopped enjoying—makes their listening experience cleaner and more intentional.

Some listeners also delete podcasts to manage their data usage. If you're on a limited cellular plan and you've been streaming or downloading episodes over mobile data, removing older files means you're not paying for storage of content you've already consumed.

Practical takeaway: Before you start deleting, ask yourself whether you're doing this to free up storage, organize your library, or both. This determines which deletion method works best for you.

Understanding the Difference Between Deleting Episodes and Unsubscribing

Apple's Podcasts app offers two distinct actions: deleting individual episodes and unsubscribing from a show entirely. Many people confuse these, which can lead to accidentally losing a podcast they still want to hear, or keeping a show they don't actually listen to anymore.

Deleting an episode removes that single audio file from your iPhone's storage. If you subscribed to a podcast and the new episode auto-downloaded, but you decided you didn't want it, you can delete just that episode. The show itself remains in your library, and new episodes will still arrive automatically (if you have auto-download enabled). Deleted episodes can sometimes be re-downloaded if you change your mind, though this depends on whether the podcast host keeps archives available.

Unsubscribing means removing the entire podcast from your library. When you unsubscribe, you stop receiving new episodes, and the show disappears from your list. The Podcasts app may keep a record that you once subscribed, but the show won't show up in your main library anymore. If you unsubscribe from a show and later change your mind, you'll need to search for it and subscribe again—it's like starting fresh.

The practical difference matters. If you're on vacation and you've downloaded three episodes of a show to listen offline, you might delete just the episodes you've already heard to save space, while keeping one unlistened episode. You'd stay subscribed so new ones arrive when you're home. Alternatively, if you realize you've lost interest in a podcast entirely, unsubscribing is more efficient than deleting episodes one at a time.

Practical takeaway: Think about whether you might want to listen to a show again in the future. If yes, just delete individual episodes. If no, unsubscribe from the show to clean up your library completely.

How to Delete Individual Podcast Episodes

Deleting a single episode from your iPhone's Podcasts app takes just a few taps. This is the method to use if you want to free up space but stay subscribed to the show.

First, open the Podcasts app on your iPhone. Look for the podcast whose episode you want to delete. You can find it by browsing your library, searching, or looking in the "Up Next" queue if the episode is waiting there. Tap on the podcast name to open it. You'll see a list of all episodes, usually showing the newest ones first.

Find the episode you want to remove. Swipe left across the episode name (this is the same gesture you'd use to reveal hidden options in many iPhone apps). A red "Delete" button will appear on the right side of the screen. Tap it, and the episode is gone. On some versions of iOS, you might see additional options appear when you swipe, such as "Mark as Played" or "Add to Up Next"—just look for the delete option among these choices.

If swiping doesn't work, try pressing and holding on the episode name for a second or two. A small menu will pop up with several options, including delete. This method sometimes feels more reliable than swiping, especially on older iPhone models or if you have accessibility settings enabled that change how gestures work.

A faster way to delete multiple episodes at once is to tap "Edit" at the top right of the episode list (this appears on some iOS versions and podcast app updates). When you tap Edit, a circle appears next to each episode. Tap the circles next to the episodes you want to remove—they'll turn blue with a checkmark when selected. Then look for a "Delete" button that appears, usually at the bottom of the screen.

Practical takeaway: Individual episode deletion is your fastest method if you only want to remove a few old files. Use the swipe-and-delete gesture for speed, or the Edit method if you're removing many episodes from one show at once.

How to Unsubscribe From a Podcast Entirely

If you've decided a podcast isn't for you anymore, unsubscribing removes it completely from your library and stops new episodes from arriving. This is cleaner than deleting episodes one by one if you're done with the show.

Open the Podcasts app and locate the show you want to unsubscribe from. You can search for it or scroll through your library. Tap on the podcast name to open its main page. At the top of the page, you'll see the podcast cover art and the show's name. Look for a button that says "Unsubscribe"—it's usually located near the top right corner of the screen, or sometimes it appears as part of a menu indicated by three dots or a button labeled "More."

Tap the Unsubscribe button. The app will ask you to confirm this action because unsubscribing is permanent in the sense that it breaks your subscription relationship. Once you confirm, the podcast leaves your library immediately. You won't receive notifications about new episodes, and the show won't appear in your library anymore.

Be aware that unsubscribing doesn't always delete all the downloaded episodes immediately on some versions of iOS. You might see the show disappear from your main library but find that episodes are still taking up storage space. If this happens, you'll need to manually delete those episodes, or you can use the Settings app to manage Podcasts app storage. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find "Podcasts," and you can view what's stored there.

Another approach is to use the Subscriptions tab within the Podcasts app (available in newer iOS versions). This shows all the podcasts you're currently subscribed to. You can long-press on any podcast name and select "Unsubscribe" from the menu that appears. This method is often faster if you want to unsubscribe from several shows in a row.

Practical takeaway: Unsubscribe from shows you know you won't return to. This stops new episodes from cluttering your app and sends a signal to Apple about your listening habits, which can improve podcast recommendations if you use that feature.

Managing Auto-Download and Preventing Unwanted Storage Use

One reason podcasts pile up on your iPhone is the auto-download feature. Many people enable this without realizing it means new episodes automatically appear on their phone, consuming storage without their active involvement. Understanding and adjusting these settings can prevent the problem from happening in the first place.

To check your auto-download settings, open the Podcasts app and look for the Settings or Preferences option (usually accessed through a gear icon or the three-dot menu). Look for an option related to "Downloads" or "Auto-Download." You'll typically see options like "
