Delete Your Shopify Store Robots.txt File Guide

Understanding Your Shopify Store's Robots.txt File

A robots.txt file is a simple text document that lives on your website's server. It communicates directly with search engine crawlers—the automated programs that Google, Bing, and other search engines send out to explore websites. Think of it as a set of instructions for these crawlers, telling them which parts of your site they can visit and which parts they should skip.

When you operate a Shopify store, this file serves an important function. Search engines need to know about your product pages, collections, and blog posts so they can index them and display them in search results. At the same time, you may have sections of your store that don't need to appear in search results—like admin pages, customer account areas, or duplicate content.

Every website, including Shopify stores, has a default robots.txt file. Shopify creates one automatically for you. This default file already contains sensible rules that prevent search engines from indexing pages that shouldn't be publicly searchable. Your cart page, checkout pages, and customer account pages are all blocked by default, which is exactly what most store owners want.

The robots.txt file doesn't actually prevent people from visiting pages on your site. It only communicates with search engine bots. If someone has a direct link to a page, they can visit it regardless of what your robots.txt says. The file is purely about search engine visibility and how crawlers spend their time on your site.

Practical takeaway: Before you consider deleting or changing your robots.txt file, understand that Shopify's default version already protects sensitive pages from search results while allowing your important content to be found.

Why Store Owners Decide to Delete Their Robots.txt File

Store owners consider deleting their robots.txt file for several different reasons, and understanding these motivations can help you determine if this action makes sense for your specific situation. One common reason is troubleshooting. If a store owner notices that their pages aren't appearing in Google search results, they might wonder if the robots.txt file is blocking content it shouldn't be. In some cases, a misconfigured robots.txt can prevent important product pages from being indexed.

Another reason relates to starting fresh. When someone takes over an existing Shopify store or is trying to fix long-standing search visibility problems, they might want to remove all robots.txt restrictions and let search engines crawl everything. The thinking is that a completely open approach will help search engines discover all content and improve indexing.

Some store owners also delete the robots.txt file because they don't understand what it does or believe it's unnecessary. If they've read that search engines index websites automatically, they might assume the robots.txt file isn't important. This misconception can lead to deletion as a way to "simplify" their site configuration.

Technical issues can also prompt deletion. If a store owner has made changes to their robots.txt and things went wrong—such as accidentally blocking important content—deleting the file and starting over might seem like the quickest solution rather than debugging the specific rules.

Store owners might also delete the file when migrating their store to Shopify from another platform. They may have had a custom robots.txt on their old hosting and believe they need to completely reconfigure it rather than work with Shopify's default version.

Practical takeaway: Understand your specific reason for considering deletion before acting. Most problems that seem to require deletion can actually be solved by adjusting your existing robots.txt file instead.

How to Locate and Access Your Robots.txt File in Shopify

Finding your robots.txt file in Shopify is straightforward because the platform makes it available at a standard location. To access your robots.txt file, you need to visit your store's domain followed by "/robots.txt". For example, if your store is at myshop.com, you would type myshop.com/robots.txt into your browser's address bar and press Enter. A text file will load showing your current robots.txt content.

You don't need to log into your Shopify admin dashboard to view this file—it's publicly available, just like it is on every website. This public availability is intentional because search engines need to be able to read it without authentication.

To edit your robots.txt file in Shopify, you do need admin access. Log into your Shopify dashboard and navigate to the Online Store section. From there, go to Preferences. In the Preferences page, scroll down until you find the Search engine optimization section. Within this section, you'll see an option to edit your robots.txt file. Click on "Edit robots.txt" and you'll see the current content in an editable text box.

If you're using a custom domain rather than a myshop.myshopify.com domain, the process is identical. The robots.txt file will still be accessible at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and edited through the same Preferences section.

Before making any changes, take a screenshot or copy the current robots.txt content somewhere safe. This gives you a reference point if you need to understand what was there before or if you want to restore previous settings later. Many store owners keep a simple text file on their computer with previous versions of their robots.txt for reference.

Practical takeaway: Always view and copy your current robots.txt content before making changes. This creates a reference point and makes it easier to troubleshoot if something doesn't work as expected.

What Happens When You Delete Your Robots.txt File

When you delete your robots.txt file from your Shopify store, you're removing the instructions you had given to search engine crawlers. However, the consequences of deletion aren't always what store owners expect, and understanding what actually happens is important before you proceed.

First, if you simply delete the file entirely, search engines will initially look for your robots.txt and find nothing. When a robots.txt file doesn't exist, search engines typically assume there are no restrictions and proceed to crawl your entire website. This might sound good in theory—more crawling means more indexing, right? The reality is more complicated.

Search engines still have crawl budgets. This is the amount of time and resources a search engine allocates to crawling your specific website. If your robots.txt was previously blocking pages that don't need to be indexed—like checkout pages, account pages, cart pages, and duplicate content—those pages were preserving your crawl budget for actually important content. By removing the robots.txt file, you're potentially wasting crawl budget on pages that Google doesn't need to index.

Sensitive pages might become indexed. Your Shopify store's default robots.txt already blocks customer account pages and checkout processes from being indexed. If you delete the file completely, these pages could potentially appear in search results or be cached by search engines. This creates a privacy concern because customer account information could theoretically be accessed through search engines.

Duplicate content issues may increase. Shopify stores often have multiple URLs that point to the same product or collection—different filtering options, sorting options, and session parameters can create duplicate pages. A well-configured robots.txt helps manage these duplicates. Without it, search engines might index many duplicate versions of the same page, which can dilute your search engine visibility.

Your search rankings might actually decrease rather than improve. If search engines spend crawl budget on unimportant duplicate pages, they have less budget for your important product and content pages. This can lead to slower indexing of new products and potentially lower search visibility overall.

Practical takeaway: Deleting your robots.txt file doesn't automatically improve search visibility—it often creates more problems by wasting crawl budget and potentially indexing sensitive pages.

Step-by-Step Process for Deleting Your Robots.txt File

If you've determined that deletion is the right choice for your situation, the process in Shopify is straightforward. Start by logging into your Shopify admin dashboard with an account that has permission to edit store settings. You'll need administrator access to modify robots.txt files.
