Delete Your Pinterest Account: Step-by-Step Guide

Why People Delete Pinterest Accounts (And What Happens When They Do)

Pinterest isn't for everyone, and the reasons people decide to leave are surprisingly varied. Some users find themselves spending hours scrolling through pins without actually using the platform for its original purpose — collecting ideas for projects. Others delete their accounts due to privacy concerns, wanting to reduce their digital footprint across multiple social platforms. Some people simply lose interest after realizing the content no longer resonates with them, while others are frustrated by changes to the app's interface or recommendation algorithm.

The decision to delete often comes after a period of inactive use. According to Pinterest's own transparency reports, millions of accounts go dormant each year — users who haven't logged in for months but never formally removed their presence. For these users, deletion becomes a way to clean house and ensure their personal information isn't sitting idle on a server.

Before you delete, it's worth understanding what actually happens. Pinterest will remove your profile, boards, and saved pins from public view within 30 days, though the company retains some data for a period according to their privacy policy. Any collaborative boards you created remain accessible to other contributors, but your name no longer appears as the creator. Comments you've left on others' boards may also be removed from public view. Pins you uploaded that were saved by others will show as saved, but the source link may become inactive depending on how they were uploaded.

Some users choose to deactivate rather than delete — a middle ground that temporarily hides their account for up to 30 days, allowing them to change their mind. Others simply stop using the platform without formally closing the account. Understanding these options helps you make the choice that actually matches your goals, whether that's a permanent break or just a pause.

Practical takeaway: Spend a few minutes deciding whether you truly want permanent deletion or just a temporary break. Many people regret hasty deletions when they later want to retrieve saved boards or reference old pins.

Locating the Account Deletion Option in Pinterest's Settings

Finding where Pinterest hides the deletion option requires navigating through several layers of settings, as most platforms intentionally make account removal less obvious than account creation. The process differs slightly depending on whether you're using the mobile app, mobile browser, or desktop version, though the underlying steps remain consistent.

On the desktop version, start by logging into your Pinterest account and clicking your profile icon in the top right corner. You'll see a dropdown menu with various options including "Settings." Click Settings, which will take you to your account management page. From here, look for the "Account" section on the left sidebar. Scroll down the main panel until you reach the bottom of the account settings. This is where you'll find the "Deactivate account" or "Delete account" option — Pinterest groups these together under account status controls.

If you're using the mobile app on iOS or Android, the process is nearly identical but the menu structure looks different on smaller screens. Open the app, tap your profile icon (usually in the bottom right corner), then tap the three horizontal lines to open the menu. Select "Settings and privacy" and then choose "Settings." From there, scroll down to find "Account" or "Account settings." The deletion or deactivation option will be near the bottom of these settings, often labeled as a red or warning-colored button.

Some users report that the option doesn't appear immediately on their screen, especially if they haven't scrolled to the very bottom of the settings page. If you don't see it right away, check whether your browser zoom is at 100% — sometimes zoomed-in views can push content off-screen. Also verify you're logged into the correct Pinterest account if you have multiple accounts, as settings only apply to the currently active account.

Users accessing Pinterest through a mobile web browser (rather than the app) should navigate to pinterest.com, log in, and use the same process as desktop, though the layout may appear slightly compressed depending on your browser.

Practical takeaway: Bookmark or screenshot the settings page path before you need it, so you don't have to search through multiple menus if you're feeling indecisive or want to verify the location with someone else first.

The Difference Between Deactivating and Permanently Deleting Your Account

Pinterest offers two distinct options for leaving the platform, and understanding the difference is critical because they produce very different outcomes. Deactivation is temporary and reversible, while deletion is meant to be permanent. Choosing the wrong option can lead to frustration or regret, so this step deserves careful consideration.

When you deactivate your account, your profile becomes hidden from public view. Other users cannot find your profile page, see your boards, or view your pins. However, your account information remains stored on Pinterest's servers in a recoverable state. If you change your mind within 30 days, you can reactivate by simply logging back in with your username and password. Your boards, pins, and profile information will reappear exactly as you left them. This option is ideal for people who want to take a break from Pinterest without completely severing ties or losing their content.

Permanent deletion, by contrast, begins the process of removing your account from Pinterest's systems. Once you confirm deletion, your profile is removed from public view, and your content (boards and pins) will no longer appear in search results or on other users' feeds within 30 days. However, it's important to note that Pinterest indicates it may retain some data for longer periods for legal, technical, or operational reasons. Unlike deactivation, you cannot simply log back in to restore everything. After 30 days, your account cannot be recovered.

There's also a practical consideration regarding collaborative boards. If you deactivate, other users can still see and edit shared boards, they just won't see your profile. If you delete, collaborative boards remain but your name as a contributor disappears. This matters if you've been working on group boards with family or colleagues.

Some users create a hybrid approach: deactivating for 30 days while they decide, then returning to make a final deletion decision if they're confident. This strategy reduces the risk of permanent data loss based on a temporary frustration with the platform.

Practical takeaway: If this is your first time considering leaving Pinterest, choose deactivation first. The 30-day window gives you time to see whether you actually miss the platform before making an irreversible choice.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough of the Actual Deletion Process

The actual deletion requires you to move through a confirmation sequence designed to prevent accidental removals. Pinterest will ask you to confirm your choice multiple times and may present information about what will happen to your data. Here's what to expect at each stage.

After locating the account deletion option in your settings, you'll see a message explaining that your account will be deactivated or deleted. Pinterest distinguishes these in their interface, so read carefully to confirm you're selecting the right one. Click the button that says "Deactivate account" or "Delete account" — the exact wording depends on your current settings configuration and whether you previously deactivated and are now choosing permanent deletion.

You'll then be asked to provide a reason for leaving. Pinterest offers a dropdown menu with options like "I don't use Pinterest," "I'm concerned about privacy," "I have too many notifications," or "Other." This step is optional — you don't need to provide a reason if you prefer not to. However, Pinterest uses this feedback to understand why users leave, so selecting an actual reason (if one applies) can be more helpful than selecting "Other."

After selecting a reason, you may be presented with suggestions to improve your experience instead of deleting — things like muting certain categories, unfollowing accounts, or adjusting notification settings. Review these suggestions, but understand that they're optional. If you're committed to leaving, simply proceed to the next step.

Pinterest will then ask you to re-enter your password to confirm you're actually the account holder. This is a standard security measure. Type your password in the field provided. If you can't remember your password, use the "Forgot password?" link to reset it before attempting deletion again.

Once you've entered your password correctly, you'll see a final confirmation message stating that your account will be deleted. At this point, click the final confirmation button. Your account deletion has been initiated. Pinterest will send a confirmation email to the address associated with your account, notifying you that the deletion process has begun. You can potentially cancel the deletion by clicking a link in that email, but you have a limited time window — usually within 24 hours — to
