Delete Screenshots From Your Phone or Computer Guide

Understanding Why You Might Want to Delete Screenshots

Screenshots capture whatever is on your screen at a specific moment. People take screenshots for many reasons: saving important information, documenting conversations, capturing funny moments, or recording error messages to troubleshoot problems. However, screenshots also create permanent records on your devices. Once saved, they take up storage space and remain accessible to anyone with physical access to your phone or computer.

According to a 2023 Pew Research survey, approximately 78% of smartphone users take screenshots regularly, though many don't think about what happens to those files afterward. Screenshots can contain sensitive information like passwords partially visible in images, personal messages, banking details, medical information, or private photos. Unlike messages or emails that might auto-delete, screenshots typically stay on your device indefinitely unless you deliberately remove them.

Another consideration is device storage. A single high-resolution screenshot on a modern smartphone uses between 1 to 5 megabytes of space. While this seems small, taking hundreds of screenshots over months can consume several gigabytes—space that could be used for photos, videos, or applications. On computers, the situation is similar. A typical computer screenshot occupies 2 to 10 megabytes depending on screen resolution and image compression.

Beyond storage concerns, there's the privacy dimension. Screenshots often end up in standard photo folders where they mix with personal media. This creates organization problems and security risks. If your device is lost, stolen, or accessed by someone else, screenshots might reveal information you never intended to share. Understanding these reasons helps you decide which screenshots deserve permanent storage and which ones you should remove.

Practical Takeaway: Regularly review and delete screenshots containing sensitive information, outdated temporary information, or duplicates to protect your privacy and free up device storage space.

How to Delete Screenshots on iPhone and iPad

iPhone and iPad screenshots are automatically saved to your Photos app in the "Screenshots" album. Apple created this dedicated folder specifically to organize screenshots separately from other photos, making them easier to locate and manage. To access your screenshots on any iOS device, open the Photos app and look for the "Screenshots" album in the Collections tab.

To delete individual screenshots on an iPhone or iPad, follow these steps: Open the Photos app, navigate to the Albums tab at the bottom, find and tap "Screenshots," select the photos you want to remove, tap "Delete," and confirm your choice. You can select multiple screenshots at once by tapping "Select" in the upper right corner, then tapping each screenshot you want to delete. After selecting all desired screenshots, tap "Delete" and confirm the removal.

If you want to delete all screenshots at once, you can select all photos in the Screenshots album. However, Apple recommends reviewing them first to ensure you're not deleting something important. Some users create a separate album before bulk deleting—just select all screenshots, tap "Add to Album," create a new album called "Screenshots to Review," and move them there temporarily. This serves as a second checkpoint before permanent deletion.

After deletion, screenshots don't immediately disappear. iOS moves deleted photos to the "Recently Deleted" album, where they remain for 30 days before permanent removal. This grace period allows you to recover screenshots if you change your mind. To permanently delete them sooner, open the Photos app, go to Albums, tap "Recently Deleted," select the screenshots you deleted, and tap "Delete Permanently."

For users concerned about accidental deletion, you can enable iCloud Photos backup, which creates copies of your photos in cloud storage. However, this also backs up screenshots, so you'd need to delete them from iCloud as well if you want complete removal. To manage iCloud storage for photos, go to Settings, tap your Apple ID, select iCloud, find Photos, and review your backup settings.

Practical Takeaway: Use the Screenshots album to organize removals, take advantage of the 30-day Recently Deleted grace period as a safety net, and verify backup settings before expecting screenshots to be completely gone from all your devices.

How to Delete Screenshots on Android Devices

Android devices handle screenshots differently depending on the manufacturer and version of Android operating system installed. Most Android phones, including those made by Samsung, Google, OnePlus, and others, save screenshots to a folder called "Screenshots" in the default file storage location, typically found within the Pictures folder. The exact location may vary slightly between devices, but the general process remains similar across most Android phones.

To delete screenshots on a typical Android phone, open the file manager or gallery app (many phones have both), navigate to Pictures or Photos, locate the Screenshots folder, and open it. Once inside, you can tap and hold individual screenshots to select them or use the select all option. After choosing which screenshots to remove, tap the delete or trash icon. The screenshots will typically move to a trash or recycle bin folder, similar to Windows computers.

Different Android phones use different apps for viewing photos and screenshots. Samsung devices use Samsung Gallery, Google Pixel phones use Google Photos, and other manufacturers use their own custom gallery applications. Google Photos, which comes pre-installed on many Android devices, automatically backs up screenshots to Google's cloud storage. If you delete a screenshot from your phone but have Google Photos enabled, the image may still exist in the cloud. To completely remove it, you'll need to delete it from Google Photos as well by opening Google Photos, finding the screenshot, and permanently deleting it from both your device and the cloud backup.

Some Android devices include a trash or recycle bin feature where deleted files stay for a limited period—usually 15 to 30 days—before permanent deletion. If your phone has this feature, you can recover deleted screenshots during the grace period. To permanently delete screenshots from the trash, open your file manager, find the trash or recycle bin folder, select the screenshots, and choose permanent deletion.

For advanced users, Android also allows you to disable automatic screenshot saving entirely. On some devices, you can access screenshot settings through Developer Options or through the camera app settings. However, this prevents all automatic screenshot saving, which may not be ideal if you want to keep some screenshots. A more practical approach is selectively deleting unwanted screenshots and using cloud storage settings to control backup behavior.

Practical Takeaway: Check both your phone's local storage and any cloud backup services (like Google Photos) when deleting Android screenshots, since copies may exist in multiple locations even after removing them from your device.

How to Delete Screenshots on Windows Computers

Windows computers save screenshots in various locations depending on how you captured them. The most common methods include using the Print Screen key, which copies the screenshot to your clipboard; using Windows + Print Screen, which saves to the Pictures folder; using the Snipping Tool; or using the newer Snip & Sketch application. Understanding where your screenshots go helps you locate and delete them effectively.

When you use Windows + Print Screen, Windows automatically saves the screenshot to your Pictures folder in a subfolder called "Screenshots." To delete these, open File Explorer, navigate to Pictures, find the Screenshots folder, and view the images inside. Select the screenshots you want to remove by clicking them individually while holding Ctrl, or select all using Ctrl + A. Right-click and choose "Delete" to move them to your Recycle Bin. Screenshots in the Recycle Bin remain there until you empty it, providing a safety window for recovery.

If you use the Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch application to capture screenshots, those images are typically saved to your Downloads folder or a location you specify during saving. These aren't automatically organized in a Screenshots folder, so you'll need to manually locate them. Many users save these to the Downloads folder, which can become cluttered over time. Regularly reviewing your Downloads folder and deleting old screenshots helps maintain organization and frees storage space.

Windows also stores temporary screenshot data in the clipboard. When you take a screenshot using Print Screen, the image is copied to clipboard memory but not automatically saved to disk. You must paste it into an application like Paint, Word, or email to save it as a file. However, clipboard data is temporary and doesn't persist after restarting your computer, so this particular storage location requires no action.

For screenshots backed up to cloud services like OneDrive (which many Windows users have enabled), you'll need to delete them from both your local computer and the cloud. Open OneDrive in File Explorer, navigate to the Pictures or Screenshots folder within OneDrive, and delete screenshots there as well. Additionally, Windows sometimes creates automatic backups through File History. To check if your screenshots are backed up through File History, open Settings, go to System, select About, find Advanced system settings, click the System Protection
