Delete Multiple Voicemails at Once on iPhone

Why You Might Want to Clear Out Multiple Voicemails

Your iPhone's voicemail box can fill up faster than you'd expect. Between promotional calls, wrong numbers, and messages you've already listened to, voicemails accumulate and take up storage space on your device. Many people find themselves with dozens—sometimes hundreds—of old voicemails they no longer need.

The challenge most iPhone users face is that the voicemail app doesn't have an obvious "select all" button or a bulk delete feature that jumps out at you. This means many people delete voicemails one at a time, which can feel tedious when you're trying to clear out a full inbox. Understanding the actual methods available to you makes this task much more manageable.

Beyond storage concerns, organizing your voicemail can be practical. If you need to listen to important messages, having fewer old ones cluttering your list makes it easier to find what matters. Some users also notice that their iPhone runs more smoothly when they've cleared out accumulated data, though this varies depending on how full your voicemail box has become.

The good news is that iPhone gives you a few different approaches to deleting multiple voicemails at once. The method you choose depends on which iOS version you're running and how many messages you need to remove. Learning these methods means you won't feel stuck deleting voicemails one by one ever again.

Practical takeaway: Clearing multiple voicemails takes just a few minutes once you know where to look in the Phone app—you don't need any third-party tools or complicated workarounds.

The Standard Method: Using Edit Mode in the Phone App

The most straightforward way to remove multiple voicemails on iPhone is through the built-in Edit mode in your Phone app. This method works on most recent iPhone models and iOS versions, making it the go-to approach for most users.

Here's how the process works: First, open the Phone app on your iPhone and tap the "Voicemail" tab at the bottom right of your screen. You'll see your list of voicemails arranged with the newest ones at the top. At the top left of your voicemail list, you should see an "Edit" button in gray text. Tap this button, and your interface changes—each voicemail now displays a red circle with a minus sign to its left.

Once you're in Edit mode, you can tap the red minus circle next to each voicemail you want to delete. As you tap, a red "Delete" button appears to the right of that voicemail entry. You can continue selecting as many voicemails as you want. If you realize you've selected one by mistake, just tap its circle again to deselect it—the red button disappears.

After you've selected all the voicemails you want to remove, look at the bottom right of your screen. You'll see a "Delete" button (usually in red). Tap this button once, and all your selected voicemails are removed from your phone at the same time. The interface returns to normal, showing your remaining voicemails. This entire process typically takes less than a minute, even if you're removing dozens of messages.

One thing to keep in mind: deleted voicemails are gone permanently. iPhone doesn't have a recovery feature or trash bin for voicemails like it does for text messages. Make sure you don't have any important information in a voicemail before you delete it. If you need to save something from a voicemail, you might want to write it down or forward it to yourself via email first.

Practical takeaway: The Edit button in your Phone app's Voicemail tab is your main tool—tap it, select the messages you want gone, and confirm the deletion in about 60 seconds.

Selecting All Voicemails at Once: The Three-Finger Tap Trick

If your voicemail box is completely full and you want to start fresh, there's a faster approach than selecting voicemails one by one. Once you're in Edit mode, you can select all your voicemails simultaneously using a gesture that many iPhone users don't realize exists.

After you tap "Edit" and the red minus circles appear next to your voicemails, use three fingers to tap anywhere on your voicemail list. This gesture selects every voicemail in your list at once. The red minus circles remain visible, and you'll notice that all your voicemails now have "Delete" buttons showing up beside them. This is much faster than manually tapping each one when you're dealing with 50, 100, or even more voicemails.

The three-finger tap works because it's an accessibility gesture that Apple built into iOS. It's designed to help users select multiple items quickly, and it functions consistently across many Apple apps and interfaces. Not all iPhone users know about this trick, which means many people waste time doing manual selections when they could clear everything in seconds.

After the three-finger tap, your voicemail list shows every message selected and ready for deletion. Review the list quickly to make sure you don't see any voicemails you want to keep—the three-finger tap selects everything, so if you have even one message you care about, you'll need to deselect it before confirming. Once you're satisfied, tap the "Delete" button at the bottom right, and your entire voicemail box is cleared.

This method is particularly useful for people who rarely listen to their voicemails and want to reset their inbox completely. It's also helpful if your phone has been running slowly and you suspect a very full voicemail box might be contributing to the issue. Within a few taps, you can go from hundreds of messages to a clean slate.

Practical takeaway: A three-finger tap in Edit mode selects all voicemails at once—much faster than individual selections if you're clearing out your entire voicemail box.

Deleting Voicemails by Swiping: The Quick Method

If you prefer not to use Edit mode, there's another way to delete voicemails on iPhone, though it works best when you're removing just a few at a time. This method uses the swipe gesture, which many iPhone users already know from deleting text messages or emails.

In your Voicemail tab, you can swipe left on any individual voicemail message. A red "Delete" button appears on the right side of that message entry. Tap the red Delete button, and that single voicemail is removed. You can repeat this process for as many voicemails as you want, swiping left on each one and confirming the deletion.

The swiping method is less efficient than using Edit mode when you have many messages to delete, but it's useful in specific situations. If you're listening through your voicemails one by one and want to delete some as you go, swiping is quicker than entering Edit mode. It's also the method of choice if you only need to delete a handful of messages and don't want to bother with the Edit interface.

Some users find swiping more intuitive because it mirrors how they delete messages in other iPhone apps. If you're already familiar with this gesture from your Mail or Messages app, you'll instinctively know how to use it with voicemails. The downside is that it's slower for bulk deletions—if you have 30 voicemails to remove, you'd need to swipe and confirm 30 times, which becomes tedious quickly.

One advantage of the swiping method is that you can do it while you're actively managing your voicemails. You might be listening through your messages, and as you hear each one, you immediately swipe to delete it if you don't need it anymore. This combines listening and deleting into one workflow rather than making deletion a separate task afterward.

Practical takeaway: Swiping left on individual voicemails and tapping Delete works for small-scale deletions, but Edit mode is faster if you're removing many messages at once.
