Delete Files and Photos From Your iCloud Account

Understanding iCloud Storage and What Gets Stored

iCloud is Apple's cloud storage service that automatically saves your data across your devices. When you use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with your Apple ID, iCloud stores photos, videos, documents, messages, mail, contacts, calendar events, reminders, and many other types of files. According to Apple's data, iCloud users generate millions of photos and videos daily that sync across devices.

Your iCloud account comes with 5 gigabytes of free storage. This storage limit includes everything—photos, videos, backups, mail, documents, and other files. Many users find that photos and videos take up the most space. A single high-resolution photo from a modern iPhone can range from 3 to 5 megabytes, and videos can consume several hundred megabytes or more depending on length and quality. This means your 5 gigabytes of free storage may fill up relatively quickly if you take many photos or record videos regularly.

Understanding what counts toward your storage limit is important before you start deleting content. Photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos count toward your limit. Mail messages, including attachments, count toward your limit. Documents stored in iCloud Drive count toward your limit. However, certain items do not count—these include your device backups stored in iCloud Backup, content purchased from Apple (like apps or music), items in Recently Deleted folders (temporarily), and iCloud Mail attachments that are currently being displayed.

You can check how much storage you're using by opening Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tapping your name, selecting iCloud, and then tapping Manage Storage. On a Mac, you can go to System Preferences, click your Apple ID, select iCloud, and click Manage. This shows you exactly which types of files are consuming your space and helps you decide what to delete.

Practical Takeaway: Before deleting anything, identify what's consuming your storage space. Photos and videos typically use the most space, so reviewing these categories first will have the biggest impact on freeing up storage.

Deleting Photos from iCloud Through the Photos App

The Photos app is the primary way most people manage and delete photos from iCloud. When iCloud Photos is turned on, any photo you delete from the Photos app removes it from iCloud as well as from all your other connected devices. This is a synchronized process—the deletion happens across your entire ecosystem of Apple devices within minutes to hours, depending on internet connection and device activity.

To delete individual photos on an iPhone or iPad, open the Photos app, navigate to the photo you want to remove, and tap Select in the upper right corner. You can select multiple photos by tapping each one—they'll show a checkmark when selected. After selecting the photos you want to delete, tap the trash can icon at the bottom right of the screen. A confirmation message will appear asking "Delete [number] Photos?" Tap Delete Photo to confirm. The photos move to the Recently Deleted album, where they remain for 30 days before permanent deletion. During this 30-day period, you can recover the photos if you change your mind.

On a Mac running macOS 10.15 or later, you can delete photos through the Photos app as well. Open the Photos app, select the photo or photos you want to delete by clicking on them (hold Command while clicking to select multiple photos), and then press Delete or Command+Delete. A dialog box appears asking for confirmation. Click Delete to move the photos to Recently Deleted.

You can also delete entire albums. In the Photos app on iPhone or iPad, go to the Albums tab, tap Edit in the upper left, and then tap the red minus sign next to the album you want to delete. Confirm the deletion by tapping Delete Album. Note that deleting a custom album you created only removes the album itself—the photos remain in your library. However, deleting a Smart Album (albums created automatically by iOS based on dates, locations, or other criteria) does not delete the photos.

Practical Takeaway: Use the Select feature to delete multiple photos at once rather than deleting them one by one. Remember that deleted photos go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, giving you a window to recover them if you delete something by mistake.

Permanently Removing Files from the Recently Deleted Folder

When you delete a photo or video from your Photos app, it doesn't disappear immediately. Instead, it moves to the Recently Deleted album, where it remains for 30 days. This built-in safety feature prevents accidental permanent loss. However, if you want to permanently remove files from your iCloud account, you must empty the Recently Deleted folder or delete individual items from it before the 30 days pass.

On an iPhone or iPad, access Recently Deleted by opening the Photos app, tapping the Albums tab at the bottom, scrolling down, and selecting Recently Deleted. You'll see all photos and videos deleted in the past 30 days, marked with the number of days remaining before they're permanently removed. To delete individual items from this folder, tap Select in the upper right corner, choose the photos or videos you want to permanently remove, and tap Delete. Confirm by tapping Delete Photos. These items are now permanently gone from your iCloud account.

To empty the entire Recently Deleted folder at once on iPhone or iPad, open Recently Deleted, tap Select in the upper right corner, and then tap Delete All in the lower right corner. A warning appears stating "This action cannot be undone." Confirm by tapping Delete [number] Photos (or Videos). All items in Recently Deleted are immediately and permanently removed from your iCloud account.

On a Mac, open the Photos app, click Recently Deleted in the sidebar (you may need to click the arrow next to Albums to see it), select the items you want to permanently delete, and press Delete. Alternatively, you can right-click on Recently Deleted in the sidebar and select Empty Recently Deleted to remove all items at once. A confirmation dialog will appear warning that this action cannot be undone.

It's important to note that once you permanently delete files from the Recently Deleted folder, they cannot be recovered. This is different from moving files to Trash on a computer. Consider reviewing files in Recently Deleted carefully before permanently deleting them, as you have 30 days to change your mind without taking this action.

Practical Takeaway: Use the 30-day Recently Deleted period as a safeguard. Only permanently delete files by emptying Recently Deleted when you're certain you no longer need them, as permanent deletion cannot be reversed.

Removing Files and Documents from iCloud Drive

iCloud Drive stores documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and other files that you create or upload. Unlike the Photos app, iCloud Drive operates more like a traditional file storage system. Files you delete from iCloud Drive also go through a Recently Deleted folder before permanent removal, but the process and interface differ from photo deletion.

To delete files from iCloud Drive on an iPhone or iPad, open the Files app (not Photos), tap Browse at the bottom, select iCloud Drive, and locate the file or folder you want to delete. Tap and hold the file, and a menu appears with several options including Delete. Tap Delete, and the file moves to Recently Deleted. Alternatively, tap Edit in the upper left corner of the Files app, select the files you want to delete by tapping them, and tap Delete at the bottom right.

On a Mac, you can delete files from iCloud Drive through Finder. Open Finder, click iCloud Drive in the sidebar, locate the file or folder you want to delete, and drag it to the Trash. Alternatively, right-click the file and select Move to Trash. These files move to the Trash bin, not a Recently Deleted folder specific to iCloud Drive. To permanently remove them, you must empty the Trash. Right-click the Trash icon in the Dock and select Empty Trash, or go to Finder menu and select Empty Trash.

You can also delete files from iCloud Drive through iCloud.com on any web browser. Visit iCloud.com, sign in with your Apple ID, click iCloud Drive, find the file you want to delete, click it to select it (or hold Command and click multiple files), and press Delete or click the trash icon. Files deleted this way also move to Recently Deleted, where they remain for 30 days.

When deleting folders, remember that the entire contents of the folder will be deleted as well. If you're unsure whether a folder contains important files, open it first
