Costco Travel Car Rental Savings Guide

Understanding Costco Travel Car Rental Programs

Costco Travel is a membership benefit that provides access to discounted rates on vacation packages, hotels, and car rentals. Unlike general travel websites, Costco Travel negotiates bulk rates with major car rental companies, which means members may see different pricing than what appears on public booking sites. The car rental portion of Costco Travel works by partnering with companies like Hertz, Budget, Avis, and Enterprise to offer members rates that the companies reserve specifically for Costco customers.

The way this works is straightforward: Costco has negotiated agreements with these rental agencies where they receive a set number of vehicles at reduced daily rates. These rates are typically 20-40% lower than standard walk-up rates at rental counters. The rental companies benefit because Costco guarantees a volume of customers, and Costco members benefit because they're grouped into a large purchasing block. This is similar to how hotels offer group rates for conventions or how airlines negotiate corporate travel rates.

Costco membership itself is required to book through Costco Travel. Gold Star memberships (the basic level at $60 annually) include access to Costco Travel services. Executive memberships ($120 annually) provide additional rewards on travel bookings. When you book a car rental through Costco Travel, you're purchasing directly through their platform, not through the rental company's website or phone line.

Practical takeaway: Visit the Costco Travel website and search for car rental rates in your destination before booking elsewhere to compare pricing. The rates shown are only available to current Costco members, so membership verification happens at checkout.

Comparing Costco Travel Rates to Other Booking Methods

To understand the actual savings Costco Travel offers, it's important to compare their rates against three other common booking methods: rental company websites, third-party travel sites like Kayak or Expedia, and walk-up rates at rental counters. A practical comparison might look like this: renting a mid-size car for one week in Orlando during peak season could cost $350-400 on Enterprise's main website, $320-360 on Expedia with their "best price guarantee," and potentially $250-300 through Costco Travel. These numbers fluctuate based on season, demand, and location, but Costco consistently appears among the lowest options.

Third-party travel sites like Kayak, Hotwire, and Priceline often advertise lower rates, but these sometimes come with restrictions. Hotwire, for example, doesn't reveal the rental company until after purchase, which can be inconvenient. Priceline's "express deals" operate similarly. Costco Travel, by contrast, shows you exactly which company you're renting from before you complete the booking. This transparency means you know whether you're getting Hertz, Avis, Budget, or Enterprise before committing to the reservation.

Walk-up rates at rental counters are typically the most expensive option. When someone arrives at an airport without a pre-booked reservation, they face whatever rates are available that day, which are often 30-50% higher than pre-booked rates. Rental companies price this way because last-minute customers have limited alternatives and will pay more out of necessity. This is why any pre-booking method—whether Costco, Expedia, or the rental company's site—will be cheaper than walking up to a counter.

Practical takeaway: Before finalizing any car rental booking, check Costco Travel's rate for the same dates and location. If you're not a member, the membership cost ($60 for Gold Star) may be recovered through a single car rental booking if you're renting for multiple days or during peak season.

How to Book Car Rentals Through Costco Travel

The booking process through Costco Travel involves several steps. First, you need to be logged into your Costco account on their website. The Costco Travel section is found at travel.costco.com. Once logged in, you'll see options for "Cars" among other travel categories. Click on the car rental option and enter your travel details: pickup location, dropoff location, pickup date, and dropoff date. The system will then display available vehicles and rates from partner rental companies.

When you enter your information, Costco Travel searches across their partner network simultaneously and shows results ranked by price. You'll see the daily rate, total rental cost for your dates, and insurance options. Costco Travel operates differently from rental companies regarding insurance. Rather than purchasing insurance directly from the rental company, you can often use your credit card's rental car coverage or your personal auto insurance policy's rental coverage. Some credit cards include primary coverage, meaning the card issuer pays before your insurance kicks in. Check your credit card's terms to understand your coverage level.

After selecting a vehicle and rate, you proceed to enter your personal information: driver's license details, contact information, and payment method. Payment is processed through Costco, not the rental company. You'll receive a confirmation email with your reservation details, a confirmation number, and instructions for pickup. When you arrive at the rental location on your travel date, you'll present your driver's license, the confirmation number, and a valid credit card for the security deposit. The rental company will run a temporary hold (typically $200-500) on your credit card as a deposit, which is released after you return the vehicle.

Practical takeaway: Print or screenshot your Costco Travel confirmation before traveling. Some rental locations may not have internet access to look up your reservation, and having physical proof of your booking prevents delays at pickup time.

Understanding Pricing, Insurance, and Hidden Fees

Costco Travel prices are typically stated as daily rates with a total shown for your rental period. However, several additional costs may appear at pickup or on your final bill. Understanding these potential charges helps you budget accurately and avoid surprise costs. The base rental rate is generally what Costco displays, but taxes are calculated based on the pickup location's tax rate and added to your total. Airport pickups in some cities are taxed at higher rates than downtown locations, sometimes adding 10-15% to your bill.

Airport facility fees are another common addition. Many airports charge rental companies facility fees, and these are often passed to renters. These fees can range from $5-15 per day depending on the airport. Fuel charges apply if you return the vehicle with less fuel than when you picked it up. Rental companies typically charge $5-7 per gallon for fuel, which is higher than gas station prices. To avoid this, fill your tank before returning the vehicle. Mileage policies vary by rental company; some Costco Travel deals include unlimited mileage, while others may have daily mileage limits or charges for exceeding them.

Insurance is a significant cost consideration. Costco Travel bookings display the rate without optional insurance included. When you pick up the vehicle, the rental company will offer additional insurance coverage: collision damage waiver (covers damage to the rental car), liability coverage (covers damage you cause to others or their property), and personal effects coverage (covers items stolen from the car). Before purchasing these at the rental counter, review your existing coverage. Most personal auto insurance policies extend to rental cars. Many credit cards include rental car collision coverage. If your credit card provides primary coverage, you typically don't need to purchase the rental company's collision waiver.

Practical takeaway: Before traveling, contact your insurance provider or credit card issuer to understand what rental car coverage you already have. This prevents paying for duplicate coverage and can save $10-30 per day.

Membership Levels and Which Offers the Best Car Rental Value

Costco offers two membership levels, each providing access to Costco Travel car rentals but with different reward structures. The Gold Star membership costs $60 annually and provides basic access to all Costco Travel services, including car rentals. Executive membership costs $120 annually and provides the same car rental access plus an additional 2% rewards on most Costco purchases and an extra 1% rewards on certain Costco Travel bookings.

For car rentals specifically, the difference between Gold Star and Executive comes down to that 1% travel rewards. On a $300 car rental booking, Executive members receive $3 back as a rewards certificate. For most households, this modest reward doesn't justify the $60 additional annual cost, unless you're also using Costco's grocery shopping and other benefits that earn the 2% reward. However, if your household spends over $3,000 annually at Costco on groceries and other items, the Executive membership 2% reward
