Costco Citibank Card Rewards and Features Guide

Overview of the Costco Citibank Rewards Card

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citibank is a credit card designed specifically for Costco members. This card combines membership benefits with a rewards structure that returns a percentage of purchases back to cardholders. Understanding how this card works helps people make informed decisions about their shopping and spending patterns at Costco and other retailers.

The card functions as both a Costco membership card and a Visa credit card. When you use it at Costco, you're simultaneously showing your membership status and charging your purchase to the card. This dual function means the card serves a practical purpose beyond just payment—it's also your entry to Costco locations.

Citibank issues the card and manages the credit account, while Costco handles the membership component. The card comes with an annual membership fee that varies depending on which membership tier you choose. There are three main membership levels: Gold Star (basic), Executive, and now Diamond Executive, which launched in 2024. The card's rewards rates and benefits align with your membership level.

One of the distinguishing features is that this card works exclusively at Costco locations and Costco.com for the highest rewards rates. Outside of Costco, the card still earns rewards but at different rates. This structure encourages cardholders to use the card for their Costco purchases while also providing utility for everyday spending elsewhere.

The rewards program is straightforward: you earn a percentage back on qualifying purchases, and this amount is credited to your account as an annual reward certificate. Unlike some credit cards that let you redeem rewards immediately, Costco's system works differently, which is important to understand when planning how you'll use your reward money.

Practical Takeaway: Before considering this card, confirm you're a Costco member or willing to become one, since the card's primary value comes from Costco shopping. The card's rewards structure is most beneficial for people who shop at Costco regularly and spend enough annually to make the membership fee worthwhile.

Rewards Rates at Costco and Other Retailers

The Costco Citibank card earns rewards at different rates depending on where you use it. At Costco warehouse locations and on Costco.com, the card earns 2% cash back on all purchases. This is the primary benefit for most cardholders, since it directly increases the value of what you're already spending on groceries, household items, and other products you buy at Costco.

For gas purchases, the card earns 2% cash back at Costco gas stations. If you have a Costco gas station near you and fill up there regularly, this can add meaningful rewards over time. However, outside of Costco gas stations, the rewards rate drops to 1% at other gas stations. For example, someone who spends $150 per month on gas exclusively at Costco would earn $36 in annual rewards just from fuel purchases at that rate.

Restaurant and travel purchases earn 1% cash back when made outside of Costco. This includes charges at restaurants, hotels, airlines, and other travel-related vendors. While 1% is lower than the 2% at Costco, it still provides some return on spending you're doing anyway. Travel here includes taxis, parking, trains, and similar services.

All other purchases outside of Costco earn 1% cash back. This covers everything else—online shopping at other retailers, utilities, insurance, medical expenses, and miscellaneous purchases. The 1% rate applies broadly to create a safety net of rewards even when you're not at Costco.

There's an important cap on rewards: cash back is limited to $7,500 per year at Costco locations. Once you reach this limit, you stop earning rewards on Costco purchases for that year. This works out to about $375,000 in annual Costco purchases, so for most shoppers this cap won't be a practical limitation. For very high-volume Costco shoppers or small businesses using the card, this is worth noting.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate your typical annual Costco spending and apply the 2% rewards rate to estimate what you'd earn back annually. If you spend $5,000 per year at Costco, you'd earn $100 in rewards. Compare this against the annual membership fee to determine if the card makes financial sense for your household.

How Annual Rewards Certificates Work

Unlike credit cards that let you redeem rewards points whenever you choose, the Costco card operates on an annual rewards certificate system. At the end of each year, Citibank calculates all the rewards you've earned and issues you a certificate for that amount. This certificate appears in your Costco account and can be used like cash at Costco warehouses or on Costco.com.

The timing of when you receive your certificate depends on your card anniversary date. Your anniversary is one year from the date your account was opened. About 30 days before your anniversary, Citibank processes your rewards and issues the certificate. If your anniversary is in March, you'd receive a new certificate in February for all rewards earned over the previous year.

When you receive your certificate, you can use it immediately at Costco. You present it to the cashier just like a gift card, and it reduces your total purchase amount. Online, you enter the certificate number at checkout. The certificate itself doesn't expire, so you could theoretically save it if you wanted to, though most people use it within a few weeks of receiving it.

There's a practical consideration here: since rewards come as certificates once per year rather than continuous points, you can't redeem small amounts throughout the year. You'll have a lump sum of rewards available once yearly. This means someone who earns $500 in annual rewards gets access to all $500 at once, but has to wait a full year to receive rewards from spending in the new year.

The certificate can only be used at Costco, not at gas stations, and not for membership fee payments. If you wanted to use your rewards toward renewing your membership, you'd need to find another way. This is different from some other rewards programs that let you apply rewards toward annual fees.

If your Costco membership expires, any unused rewards certificates become invalid. This is important timing to understand—if your membership is set to expire in June and you have a certificate worth $300, you need to either use that certificate before your membership expires or renew your membership to keep it active.

Practical Takeaway: Plan to use your annual rewards certificate within a reasonable timeframe after you receive it. Mark your card anniversary date on your calendar so you'll know when to expect your certificate. If you typically earn $200-300 annually in rewards, consider budgeting a Costco shopping trip around when your certificate arrives to make full use of it.

Annual Fees and Membership Costs

The Costco Citibank card requires both a credit card fee and a Costco membership fee. Understanding both is essential because the total annual cost determines whether the card's rewards are worth the expense. As of 2024, the credit card itself costs $65 per year. This is a fixed annual fee charged to your account each year you keep the card active.

The Costco membership fee depends on which membership level you choose. Gold Star membership costs $65 per year and is the basic tier. This membership allows you warehouse access and member pricing. Executive membership costs $130 per year and includes additional benefits like higher cash back on certain purchases and other perks. Diamond Executive membership, the newest tier introduced in 2024, costs $130 annually and provides additional discounts on select items.

So your total annual cost ranges from $130 (card fee of $65 plus Gold Star membership of $65) to $195 (card fee of $65 plus Executive or Diamond Executive membership of $130). This is before you earn any rewards. You need your rewards earnings to exceed these costs to come out ahead.

At the 2% reward rate for Costco purchases, you'd need to spend $3,250 per year at Costco to earn $65 in rewards—enough to cover just the credit card fee. To cover both the card fee and Gold Star membership ($130 total), you'd need $6,500 in annual Costco spending. For Executive membership holders, covering the full $195 in fees requires $9,750 in annual Cost
