Connect Your Switch Pro Controller to PC Guide

Understanding Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Basics

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a wireless gamepad designed by Nintendo for use with the Switch console. Before connecting it to your PC, it's worth understanding what this controller actually is and how it works. The device uses Bluetooth wireless technology to communicate with compatible devices, which means it doesn't require any cables or USB dongles to function. The controller features a traditional gamepad layout with two analog sticks, four action buttons, shoulder buttons, and directional controls.

The Switch Pro Controller was released in December 2017 and has remained largely unchanged since its launch. It uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that Nintendo states provides approximately 40 hours of battery life on a single charge. The controller connects via Bluetooth 5.0, which is the wireless standard used by most modern devices. This is important because it means your PC needs to have Bluetooth capability to connect with the controller.

One thing to understand upfront: Nintendo did not officially design the Switch Pro Controller for PC use. The controller works with PC through Bluetooth's standard wireless protocols, but Nintendo's official marketing materials only mention Switch compatibility. This means that while the connection process works well, you won't receive official Nintendo support if you encounter issues when using the controller on PC.

The controller is physically well-built, with a comfortable grip and responsive buttons. Many PC gamers prefer it to other wireless options because of its familiar layout and build quality. However, compatibility varies depending on which games you want to play and how you configure the controller on your system.

Practical Takeaway: Verify your PC has Bluetooth capability before attempting connection. If your computer doesn't have built-in Bluetooth, you can purchase an external Bluetooth adapter for $15-30 that plugs into a USB port.

Checking Your PC's Bluetooth Capability

Before you can connect your Switch Pro Controller to your PC, you need to confirm that your computer has Bluetooth hardware. Many modern laptops come with Bluetooth built-in, but many desktop computers do not. Checking for Bluetooth is straightforward and takes just a few minutes.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, you can check for Bluetooth by opening the Settings application. Click the Start menu, then select "Settings" (the gear icon). From there, navigate to "Bluetooth & devices" on the left sidebar. If you see a Bluetooth toggle switch at the top of this page, your computer has Bluetooth capability. If the page doesn't exist or you only see "Devices," your PC likely doesn't have Bluetooth hardware.

For older Windows systems, the location may differ. On Windows 8 or earlier, you would check the Device Manager to see if Bluetooth is listed. To access Device Manager, right-click "This PC" or "My Computer" on your desktop, select "Manage," and look for "Bluetooth radios" in the list. If this category doesn't appear, Bluetooth hardware isn't installed.

If your PC does have Bluetooth but it appears disabled, you can turn it on through the Settings menu. Look for the Bluetooth toggle switch and click it to enable the feature. Some computers also have a physical button or keyboard shortcut (often involving the Fn key) that toggles Bluetooth on and off. If your Bluetooth toggle shows as off and you can't turn it on, you may have Bluetooth hardware that needs drivers.

If your computer doesn't have Bluetooth, external USB Bluetooth adapters are widely available and inexpensive. These small devices plug into any USB port and provide Bluetooth capability. Most adapters work with Windows 10 and 11 without requiring additional software installation, though some may need drivers. When purchasing an adapter, look for ones rated for Bluetooth 4.0 or higher to ensure compatibility with modern devices.

Practical Takeaway: Make a note of your Windows version and whether Bluetooth appears in your Settings. If you need to purchase a Bluetooth adapter, aim for one with at least 10-meter range and support for multiple simultaneous connections.

Preparing Your Switch Pro Controller for PC Connection

Once you've confirmed your PC has Bluetooth capability, the next step is preparing your Switch Pro Controller for the connection process. The controller needs to be in a specific state to pair successfully with your computer. This preparation involves charging the battery and placing the controller into pairing mode.

First, charge your Switch Pro Controller fully. The controller comes with a USB-C charging cable. Connect one end to the USB-C port on the top of the controller and plug the other end into any USB power source. The charging process typically takes 2-3 hours for a full charge. While charging, a small LED light on the controller will indicate the charging status. Once fully charged, the LED will stop blinking and remain steady or turn off, depending on your controller's firmware version.

Before attempting to connect to your PC, make sure the controller is not currently connected to your Switch console. If it is, you'll need to disconnect it first by going to the Switch's settings. This isn't always required, but it prevents potential connection conflicts. You can simply power off your Switch or move out of range while setting up the PC connection.

The Switch Pro Controller enters pairing mode through a specific button combination. On the back of the controller, you'll find a small circular button labeled "Pair." Using a small object like a straightened paperclip or the tip of a pen, press and hold this button for approximately 5 seconds. You'll see the LED lights on the controller begin to flash, which indicates it's now in pairing mode. The controller remains in pairing mode for about 2-3 minutes, so you have a reasonable window to complete the PC connection.

Before pressing the Pair button, make sure your PC's Bluetooth is enabled and the Settings page is open and ready. This way, you can complete the pairing process quickly after putting the controller into pairing mode. Having everything prepared beforehand prevents the need to repeat the pairing button press if you run out of time.

Practical Takeaway: Charge your controller the night before you plan to pair it, and keep your PC's Bluetooth Settings page open before pressing the Pair button for a smoother connection experience.

Completing the Bluetooth Pairing Process on Windows

With your controller in pairing mode and your PC's Bluetooth enabled, you're ready to complete the actual pairing process. This is where your controller becomes recognized by your computer as a compatible wireless device. The process is similar to pairing any other Bluetooth device.

Open your PC's Bluetooth settings. On Windows 10 and 11, go to Settings, then "Bluetooth & devices," and ensure Bluetooth is turned on. Look for a button or option that says "Add device" or "Pair a new device." This is typically a blue button near the top of the Bluetooth settings page. Click this button to enter device discovery mode. Your computer will now search for nearby Bluetooth devices.

When you click "Add device," a window should open asking you what type of device you want to add. Select "Bluetooth" from the options presented. Your computer will then begin scanning for available Bluetooth devices within range. This scanning process usually takes 10-15 seconds. During this time, make sure your Switch Pro Controller is still in pairing mode with the LED lights flashing.

When your PC detects the controller, it will appear in the list of available devices. The device will likely be listed as "Pro Controller" or "Switch Pro Controller." Click on it to select it. Your computer will attempt to establish a connection and may display a notification asking you to confirm the pairing. Some versions of Windows will ask you to enter a PIN or simply state that pairing was successful.

Once the controller appears in your Bluetooth settings with a "Connected" status, the pairing is complete. At this point, the LED lights on the controller will stop flashing and may remain steady or turn off. Your PC now recognizes the Switch Pro Controller as an input device and is ready to use it with games and applications.

If the pairing doesn't succeed on the first attempt, the most common reason is that the controller exited pairing mode. Simply repeat the process: press and hold the Pair button again for 5 seconds and try adding the device through your Bluetooth settings again. Most second attempts are successful.

Practical Takeaway: If pairing fails, wait 30 seconds before trying again. This gives both devices time to reset their Bluetooth connection attempts and prevents conflicts from repeated
