Cómo cambiar tu dirección con USPS

Understanding USPS Address Change Basics

The United States Postal Service (USPS) processes millions of address changes each year. When you move to a new location, updating your mailing address with USPS ensures that your mail reaches you at the correct place. This process is separate from notifying other organizations like banks, employers, or subscription services—those entities maintain their own mailing lists and won't automatically receive your new address from USPS.

An address change with USPS is called a "Mail Forwarding Service." This service works by creating a record at your local post office that redirects mail sent to your old address to your new one. USPS will forward most first-class mail, periodicals, and parcels. However, some types of mail don't forward automatically, including mail addressed to "Occupant" or "Current Resident," some government documents, and mail from certain organizations that have opted out of forwarding services.

The forwarding service typically remains active for 12 months from the date you submit your change. After that period, mail sent to your old address will not be forwarded and will be treated as undeliverable. USPS may return it to the sender or dispose of it according to postal regulations. Understanding this timeline helps you plan your notifications to other organizations—you'll want to update your address with important contacts before the 12-month forwarding period ends.

USPS charges a fee for address changes. As of 2024, the fee is $1.10 for online submissions and $1.10 at post office locations. Military, diplomatic, and certain other special moves may have different fee structures. The fee is non-refundable regardless of how long you use the service.

Practical Takeaway: Address changes with USPS are not permanent—they work for 12 months only. Plan ahead by updating your address with banks, insurance companies, government agencies, and subscription services before your forwarding period expires.

Step-by-Step Process for Online Address Changes

The easiest way to change your address with USPS is through their official website at usps.com. The online method takes approximately 5-10 minutes and can be completed from your computer or mobile device. You'll navigate to the "Mail & Packages" section and select "Change of Address" or go directly to the USPS Change of Address portal.

To begin, you'll need to provide basic information about yourself and your old address. USPS asks for your full name, current (old) address, phone number, and email address. They verify this information against postal records to confirm you're an authorized person making the change. If USPS cannot find your old address in their system, they may ask for additional details or suggest that you visit a local post office instead.

Next, you'll enter your new address. This is where accuracy matters significantly. Double-check the street number, street name, city, state, and ZIP code. Typos in the new address can cause mail to be misdelivered or returned as undeliverable. USPS uses their Address Information System (AIS) to validate addresses, and the system will flag addresses it cannot recognize. If this happens, you can verify the correct format of your address using USPS's Address Lookup tool before proceeding.

You'll then select the effective date for your change. USPS allows you to set a start date up to 30 days in the future. This is useful if you know when you're moving but haven't moved yet. You can also choose whether you want to forward mail for an individual (just yourself), multiple individuals, or an entire business. For personal moves, most people select the individual option.

After entering all information, USPS requires payment using a credit card, debit card, or a bank account. The transaction is processed immediately, and you'll receive a confirmation number via email. Save this confirmation number—it shows your change was received and processed. USPS will also send a Postcard Notification to your old address within 7-10 days as verification.

Practical Takeaway: Complete your online change of address at least one week before moving day to allow time for USPS to process and implement the forwarding instruction at your local post office.

In-Person Address Changes at Post Offices

If you prefer to change your address in person or encounter issues with the online system, you can visit your local post office. This option works well if you need help from postal staff or want to change your address the same day. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license or passport) and proof of your current address. Proof of address can include a utility bill, lease agreement, or mortgage statement dated within the last 60 days.

Ask the postal clerk for Form 8822, which is the official "Change of Address Order" form. You can also fill out this form at home before visiting if you want to save time. The form asks for your old address, new address, effective date, and whether you want to forward mail for one person, multiple people, or a business. If you're changing the address for a business, you may need additional documentation showing your authorization to make that change.

The postal clerk will review your information, process the fee payment, and provide you with a receipt showing your confirmation number. Some post offices may offer you an option to certify your change, which creates an official record. This can be helpful in certain situations where you need documented proof that you filed an address change on a specific date.

One advantage of in-person changes is that USPS staff can answer questions about what will and won't forward, special situations (like mail held at the post office), or concerns about specific mail you're expecting. They can also help if your new address isn't recognized by the automated system and needs manual verification. Additionally, if you're changing your address and moving to a location served by a different post office, the clerk can ensure the change is properly transferred to the correct facility.

Processing times at the post office are typically the same as online—your forwarding service should begin within 3-5 business days. The Postcard Notification is still sent to your old address as verification.

Practical Takeaway: Choose the in-person option if you have questions about your specific situation, need to change your address immediately, or if the online system rejects your address as unrecognizable.

What Mail Forwards and What Doesn't

Understanding which types of mail USPS forwards helps you know what to expect during your transition period. First-class mail addressed to you by name will forward. This includes letters, postcards, and flat items. Packages sent via Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and parcel services will also forward. Most periodicals like magazines and newspapers forward as well, though you may want to contact subscriptions directly to confirm delivery to your new address.

However, several categories of mail do not automatically forward. Marketing mail addressed to "Occupant," "Resident," "Current Resident," or "Or Current Resident" will not be forwarded and will not be returned to the sender—USPS destroys these pieces. If you want to stop receiving this type of mail, you can register with the Mail Preference Service. First-class mail that has the words "Do Not Forward" or "Address Correction Requested" printed on it will not forward; instead, it returns to the sender with your new address information.

Certain government mailings don't forward automatically, including census materials, voter registration notices, and tax documents from some agencies. This is why it's critical to update your address directly with government agencies rather than relying only on USPS forwarding. Many government organizations maintain their own mailing lists and don't participate in postal forwarding systems. Similarly, time-sensitive documents like court notices, legal summonses, and jury duty notices typically do not forward and must be received at the address on file.

Mail from organizations that have opted out of forwarding services also won't be forwarded. Some large corporations and financial institutions handle their own address verification and deliberately prevent forwarding to ensure their systems remain accurate. Additionally, mail in your name that doesn't match your identity (such as mail for a previous resident who has the same name or a slight variation) won't forward reliably.

International mail forwarding has specific rules as well. USPS will forward certain international parcels, but forwarding may take additional time or may not work for some international mail services. Contact USPS or your mail sender if you're expecting international packages.

Practical Takeaway: Don't rely solely
