Close Your Self Account Information Guide

Understanding Self Account Closures and Why People Close Accounts

A Self account refers to a prepaid card or savings account offered by Self Financial, a company that helps people build credit history. When someone decides to close their Self account, they are ending their relationship with the company and stopping use of that financial product. This guide provides information about the steps involved in closing a Self account, what to expect during the process, and important considerations before making this decision.

People close Self accounts for various reasons. Some individuals reach their credit-building goals and no longer need the service. Others may find that a different financial product better suits their current needs. Some customers switch banks or prefer working with larger traditional financial institutions. Still others may experience changes in their financial situation that make maintaining the account unnecessary. Understanding your own reasons for closure helps you make an informed decision and ensures you take the right steps before closing.

Self Financial offers products specifically designed for credit building. Their primary product involves a prepaid savings account linked to credit reporting. The company reports account activity to the three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—which helps build credit history for people who are new to credit or have limited credit records. When you close this account, the company stops reporting new activity, though your payment history remains on your credit report.

Before closing, consider whether you have achieved your credit-building goals. Check your credit score and review your credit report. If you are still working toward better credit, closing the account may slow your progress since you will no longer be building new positive payment history. However, your existing payment history remains part of your credit record and continues to affect your score.

Practical Takeaway: Before proceeding with closure, review your credit report at annualcreditreport.com and assess whether closing your Self account aligns with your current credit goals. If you are still building credit, consider whether maintaining the account longer would be beneficial.

Steps to Close Your Self Account

Closing a Self account typically involves contacting Self Financial directly through their customer service channels. The company provides multiple ways to reach their support team, including phone, email, and online messaging through their website or mobile app. Most people find that calling customer service is the fastest way to initiate the closure process, as representatives can walk through the steps immediately and answer questions about your specific account.

When you contact Self Financial to close your account, have your account information ready. This includes your account number, which appears on your Self card or in your account statements. You may also need to provide personal identification details such as your Social Security number or date of birth to verify your identity. This verification step protects your account from unauthorized closure attempts.

The closure process involves several specific actions. First, Self Financial will confirm your request and explain what happens to your account balance and any active services. If you have funds remaining in your account, the company will explain how those funds will be returned to you—typically through a check, direct deposit to your linked bank account, or transfer back to the original funding source. Second, they will cancel your Self card if you have one. Third, they will close the savings account component and stop reporting to the credit bureaus. Fourth, they will provide confirmation of the closure.

Self Financial may ask you questions about why you are closing your account. While you are not required to provide detailed explanations, answering these questions helps the company understand customer needs. Some representatives may offer suggestions for keeping your account open or switching to a different Self product. You have the right to proceed with closure regardless of these suggestions.

The timeline for account closure varies. Some accounts close within days, while others may take one to two weeks depending on processing requirements and whether there are pending transactions. During this period, your card may be deactivated immediately, but the account officially remains open until the closure process completes. You will receive written confirmation when the closure is final.

Practical Takeaway: Contact Self Financial through their official channels (phone number on the back of your card or their website) and have your account number ready. Request written confirmation of your closure to maintain records for your files.

What Happens to Your Money When You Close

Understanding what happens to your account funds during closure is critical for avoiding financial complications. Self Financial holds your deposited money in your account until closure completes. This money belongs to you, not the company, so it will not be lost or forfeited when you close. However, how and when you receive these funds depends on the method you choose and how you set it up with the company.

The most common methods for receiving funds are direct deposit to a linked bank account and check by mail. Direct deposit is typically the fastest option, often taking three to five business days after the closure is processed. When you close your account, inform Self Financial of the bank account where you want the funds sent. Provide your account routing number and account number to ensure the transfer goes to the correct destination. Verify this information carefully, as sending funds to the wrong account creates complications and delays in retrieving your money.

If you prefer to receive funds by check, Self Financial will mail a check to the address on file. This method takes longer—typically one to three weeks depending on mail delivery times. The check arrives in your name and can be deposited at any bank or cashed at most financial institutions. Keep the check in a safe place until you are ready to deposit it. If the check is lost or damaged, contact Self Financial for a replacement, though this adds further delays.

Some customers had their Self account funded by transferring money from another account or using a debit card. In some cases, Self Financial may return the funds to the original payment source. This is not always possible, particularly if the original funding method is no longer active. Confirm with Self Financial how your specific deposit will be returned based on how you originally funded your account.

During the closure process, any pending transactions or holds may affect when you receive your full balance. If you made a recent purchase or transfer using your Self card, wait for that transaction to fully process before initiating closure. Pending transactions can delay the return of your funds. Similarly, if Self Financial placed a hold on your account for any reason—such as unusual activity or customer service investigation—closure cannot proceed until the hold is lifted.

Practical Takeaway: Before requesting closure, verify the bank account information where you want your funds sent, ensure all recent transactions have fully processed, and confirm there are no holds on your account. Request written confirmation of the refund method and expected timeline.

Impact on Your Credit Report and Credit Score

Closing your Self account affects your credit report and may influence your credit score, though the impact varies depending on your individual credit profile and other accounts. Understanding this impact helps you make an informed decision about timing. Your payment history with Self—whether you made on-time payments or missed payments—remains on your credit report even after you close the account. This history continues to affect your credit score for seven years, which is the standard reporting period for most account information.

When you close an account, credit bureaus mark it as "closed" on your report. A closed account that shows a positive payment history can still help your credit score by demonstrating responsible account management. However, closing an account stops adding new positive information to your credit profile. If you are actively building credit through limited accounts, closing one account means you are building credit through fewer sources. This can slow credit score growth.

The impact on your score depends partly on your credit mix. Credit scoring models consider the variety of account types you maintain—credit cards, installment loans, secured cards, and prepaid accounts. Closing your Self account reduces your account diversity slightly. However, if you have other accounts open and in good standing, this effect is typically minimal. People with only one or two accounts may see a slightly larger impact than those with several accounts.

Account closure may also affect your credit utilization ratio if your Self account was being counted as available credit. However, prepaid accounts are generally not included in utilization calculations the same way credit cards are, so this impact is usually negligible. Your total available credit decreases when you close any account, but the effect on your score depends on the overall composition of your credit profile.

If you have missed payments or negative history with your Self account, closing it does not remove that information from your credit report. The negative information remains visible to lenders for seven years regardless of account status. In this situation, closing the account neither helps nor hurts your credit score significantly; the damage is already recorded. However, continuing to make on-time payments before closure would actually help your score more than closing the account.
