Check Your SSDI Case Status Information Guide

Understanding SSDI and Case Status Basics

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to people with disabilities who have worked and paid Social Security taxes. Unlike Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is needs-based, SSDI is based on your work history and Social Security tax contributions. When you file for SSDI, the Social Security Administration (SSA) opens a case file to track your claim from start to finish.

Your case status refers to where your claim stands in the review process. Understanding these stages helps you know what to expect and what information you may need to provide. The SSA processes thousands of disability claims monthly, and each one follows a similar path through their system. Your case number is a unique identifier that tracks your specific claim throughout its entire lifecycle.

The status of your case changes as the SSA reviews medical evidence, work history, and other information you've submitted. Some claims are approved quickly—typically within three to five months—while others take longer if more information is needed or if a hearing is required. Knowing your current status prevents confusion and helps you understand what happens next.

The SSA maintains detailed records of your case, including all documents submitted, medical records reviewed, and decisions made. You can view information about your claim without visiting an office in person. This information is available through multiple channels, including online portals, phone lines, and local SSA field offices.

Practical takeaway: Your case status is tracked from the moment you submit your claim. Familiarizing yourself with the different stages—initial review, medical evaluation, approval or denial—helps you understand the timeline and what documentation may still be needed.

How to Access Your Case Status Online

The Social Security Administration offers an online account called "my Social Security" that allows you to view information about your claim without visiting an office. To create or access your account, visit the official Social Security website and look for the account login option. You'll need to verify your identity using information from your Social Security record.

Setting up your online account takes about 15 to 20 minutes. You'll need your Social Security number, a valid email address, and a phone number. The SSA uses a verification process that may ask questions based on your credit history or other identifying information. This security step ensures that only you can view details about your claim.

Once logged in, your online account shows several pieces of information about your SSDI case. You can see the date your claim was received, the current status of your case, and any documents or decisions the SSA has issued. If the SSA needs additional information from you, this portal often displays messages indicating what documents are required and when they should be submitted.

The online portal also displays estimated timelines for decisions. However, these timelines can vary based on the complexity of your case and whether the SSA requests additional medical evidence. The system updates regularly, so checking periodically gives you the most current information about your claim's progress.

Some people prefer not to use online accounts due to privacy concerns or lack of internet access. The SSA still allows you to check your status through other methods, which are described in later sections of this guide.

Practical takeaway: Creating a my Social Security account is a secure way to monitor your claim status from your computer or phone. Your account provides real-time updates on what stage your case is in and what documents the SSA may need from you.

Checking Status by Phone and Contacting the SSA

The Social Security Administration operates a national customer service line where you can speak with a representative about your SSDI case. The main phone number is 1-800-772-1213, and it's available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time. When you call, have your Social Security number ready, as the representative will need it to pull up your case information.

Calling the SSA can take time due to high call volumes. Wait times vary depending on the day and time you call. Early morning hours, particularly on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, typically have shorter wait times than late afternoon or Monday calls. If you're unable to reach someone quickly, you can request a callback rather than waiting on hold. The SSA will call you back during business hours on a day you specify.

When you speak with an SSA representative, they can tell you the current status of your claim, whether additional documents are needed, and approximate timelines for decisions. They can also update your contact information, answer questions about the claims process, and explain what happens at each stage. Representatives have access to your complete case file and can provide detailed information specific to your situation.

If you're deaf or hard of hearing, the SSA provides TTY services. Call 1-800-325-0778 to reach the TTY number. Spanish-language assistance is also available by calling 1-800-772-1213 and requesting a Spanish-speaking representative.

For people who prefer in-person communication, you can visit your local Social Security field office. To find the nearest office, use the office locator tool on the Social Security website. Field offices are staffed during regular business hours and can provide the same information available by phone. Some field offices accept walk-ins, while others require appointments. Calling ahead prevents unnecessary trips if your office is operating on an appointment-only basis.

Practical takeaway: Phone contact with the SSA is a direct way to learn about your case status from someone who can access your complete file. Calling early in the week and during morning hours typically results in shorter wait times.

Understanding Case Status Stages and What They Mean

SSDI claims move through several distinct stages, and understanding each one helps you know what's happening with your case. The first stage is "claim received," which means the SSA has officially logged your claim and opened your case file. This typically happens within days of submitting your application. At this stage, the SSA begins gathering your medical records and work history information.

The "under review" or "pending" status indicates that the SSA is actively examining your claim. During this stage, a disability examiner assigned to your case reads through your medical evidence, contacts your doctors if needed, and reviews your work history. The examiner also checks whether your condition meets the SSA's definition of disability. This stage can last from several weeks to several months, depending on how quickly medical records arrive and how thorough the review needs to be.

If the SSA makes a decision while your case is under review, your status will change to either "approved" or "denied." An approval means you meet the SSA's medical criteria for disability and your case is moving toward benefit payment. A denial means the SSA determined you don't currently meet the criteria. A denial doesn't end your options—you can request a reconsideration, file an appeal, or request a hearing before an administrative law judge.

Some cases move to a "hearing" status, meaning your claim has been denied at initial review and you've requested a hearing before a judge. During a hearing, you can present additional evidence, answer questions from the judge, and have an attorney or representative speak on your behalf. Hearing decisions typically come within several weeks to several months after the hearing takes place.

Cases approved after a hearing may still show different statuses as payment processing occurs. A status of "benefits awarded" means you've been approved and payments should begin. Some people see an "under appeals council review" status if they've appealed a hearing decision, which means their case is being reviewed by a higher level within the SSA.

Practical takeaway: Learning what each status means removes confusion about where your claim stands. Most cases move from "claim received" to "under review" to a final decision, though the timeline varies significantly based on the complexity of medical evidence and whether appeals are necessary.

What to Do When Your Case Status Shows Missing Documents

Frequently, when you check your case status, you'll see a message indicating that the SSA needs additional documents or information from you. Common missing documents include recent medical records from your treating physicians, evidence of ongoing treatment, work records, or proof of your identity and citizenship. When documents are listed as missing, it's important to provide them quickly, as missing information can delay your decision.

The SSA provides specific instructions about which documents are needed and how to submit them. Your online account, phone representative, or local office notice will tell you exactly what's required. The notice also includes a deadline for submitting these documents—typically 10 to 14 days from the date of
