AAA Members U-Haul Discounts Information Guide

Overview of AAA Member U-Haul Discount Programs

AAA membership has included partnerships with various moving and rental companies for many years. U-Haul, one of the largest truck rental and moving supply companies in the United States, offers reduced pricing for AAA members through negotiated discount agreements. These discounts represent a cost reduction on standard rental rates, equipment, and supplies compared to regular pricing structures.

The partnership between AAA and U-Haul functions through a membership-based discount model. Members present their AAA card or membership number at the time of rental to receive the reduced rate. The discount structure typically applies to several categories of U-Haul services, though the specific percentage or dollar amount off varies depending on the rental type, location, and current promotional periods.

Understanding how this discount program works requires knowing several key details. First, the discount is not automatic—it must be requested or entered during the rental reservation process. Second, the discount applies to the rental rate itself, not necessarily to all ancillary charges such as mileage overages, fuel, or insurance options. Third, AAA members from different membership tiers (Classic, Plus, Premier) may receive varying discount levels, though both tiers receive some form of discount.

AAA maintains agreements with U-Haul locations across the United States. U-Haul operates through company-owned locations as well as authorized dealers and franchises, which means discount availability may vary by location. Some independent U-Haul dealers may not participate in the AAA discount program, making it important to verify discount participation before completing a reservation.

Practical Takeaway: Before booking a U-Haul rental, confirm your AAA membership status and have your membership number available. Contact the specific U-Haul location where you plan to rent to verify that location participates in the AAA discount program and to learn the current discount percentage or amount.

How to Access and Redeem AAA U-Haul Discounts

Accessing AAA U-Haul discounts involves several methods, each with different levels of convenience and verification requirements. The most common approach is booking directly through U-Haul's website or phone line while providing your AAA membership information during the reservation process. U-Haul's online booking system includes a field where members can enter their AAA membership number, which automatically applies available discounts to the quote.

Phone reservations represent another method for redeeming the discount. U-Haul's customer service representatives can verify AAA membership and apply discounts during the call. This method may be preferable for members who want to confirm discount details before committing to a reservation or who have questions about specific rental options. The representative can also answer questions about which locations participate in the program and what discount percentage applies to the desired rental date and truck type.

For members who prefer in-person interactions, discounts can also be applied at the rental counter. Members present their physical AAA card or provide their membership number when picking up the rental. However, this approach carries more risk—if discounts were not applied during the online or phone reservation, availability at counter time cannot be guaranteed, and the discount may not be applied retroactively. Best practice involves securing the discount during the initial booking stage.

Some AAA regional chapters and membership websites provide direct links to U-Haul rental pages with pre-configured discount codes. These links simplify the process by automatically populating discount information. Members can check their AAA membership website or materials for these direct booking links specific to their region.

Documentation requirements are minimal. AAA membership verification typically requires only the membership number, which appears on the membership card. When picking up the rental, U-Haul may request visual identification to confirm the member's identity matches the reservation details. No additional paperwork or documentation is necessary beyond standard rental agreement requirements.

Practical Takeaway: Book online or by phone rather than waiting to apply the discount at pickup. This ensures the discount is confirmed in your reservation details and documented in your confirmation email or receipt. Save your confirmation number and discount details until after you complete the rental and return the truck.

Types of U-Haul Rentals Covered by AAA Discounts

The AAA U-Haul discount program covers multiple categories of rental equipment, though coverage and discount percentages vary by category. Truck rentals represent the primary category. U-Haul's truck fleet ranges from small cargo vans suitable for one-room moves to large 26-foot trucks for complete household relocations. AAA members receive discounts on rental rates for all truck sizes, though the percentage may differ based on truck type and market conditions. A 10-foot truck rental might receive a different discount percentage than a 20-foot truck, for example.

Trailer rentals also fall under the discount program. U-Haul offers various trailer types including utility trailers, cargo trailers, and specialized trailers for boat or vehicle transport. Members planning to tow equipment behind their own vehicle can rent these trailers at reduced rates. This category includes both open trailers and enclosed options. The discount typically applies to the trailer rental rate, though separate charges for towing equipment or insurance may apply at full price.

Moving supplies represent another covered category. U-Haul sells boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, furniture pads, and numerous other packing materials. AAA member discounts often extend to these supplies, though not always at the same percentage as truck or trailer discounts. Some locations offer discounts ranging from 10-15% on moving supplies purchases. The discount may apply whether supplies are purchased in-store at a U-Haul location or ordered through their online system for pickup.

Equipment rentals beyond vehicles also receive discounts at many locations. U-Haul rents hand trucks, dollies, furniture pads, mattress covers, and similar equipment separately from vehicle rentals. These items support the moving process when combined with truck rentals or when members are moving without renting trucks. Discount application to equipment rentals can vary significantly by location.

One-way rentals—where the truck is picked up in one location and returned to a different location—typically receive the same AAA discount as local rentals. This is important for members planning long-distance moves who want to understand pricing. However, some promotional periods or specific locations may have different discount structures for one-way rentals.

Practical Takeaway: When obtaining a U-Haul quote, request pricing on all needed items together—truck, trailer, and supplies—and verify that the AAA discount has been applied to each category. Some items may not receive discounts at certain locations, so confirming this details upfront prevents surprises at checkout.

Discount Amounts and Current Pricing Information

AAA U-Haul discount amounts are not standardized across all locations or time periods. Discounts typically range from 10% to 20% off the rental rate, though exact percentages vary based on several factors including geographic location, current demand, time of booking, and truck type. During peak moving season (May through September), discounts may be smaller percentage-wise, while off-season rentals may receive larger discounts. This fluctuation reflects U-Haul's variable pricing model.

The discount amount also varies by membership level. AAA Classic members may receive one discount tier, while AAA Plus and Premier members receive another. Historically, higher-tier memberships have received larger discounts, though this structure may change. Members should verify their specific tier's discount when booking.

Practical pricing examples illustrate how discounts impact actual costs. A local truck rental in an urban area might normally cost $50 per day. With a 15% AAA discount, the daily rate becomes $42.50, providing savings of $7.50 per day. For a three-day rental, this represents $22.50 in savings. A long-distance one-way rental with a base rate of $400 might be reduced to $340 with a 15% discount, yielding $60 in savings.

Important context: discount percentages apply only to the base rental rate, not necessarily to all charges on the final bill. Mileage charges (for rentals billed on a per-mile basis), fuel surcharges, insurance options, damage waivers, and equipment add-ons typically are not discounted. These additional charges accumulate on top of the discounted base rate. Members should review quotes carefully to understand what costs are and are not included in the discount.
